LORETTA MAY CARLSON (nee YOUNG) Loretta May Carlson (nee Young) passed away March 3, 2017 at home, with her loving husband by her side. Loretta was born on March 30, 1948 in Winnipeg, at the old Grace Hospital, to Thomas and Edith Young. She spent her childhood near Souris, MB and her teenage years in Brandon, MB. Following a year of teacher training, she started teaching kindergarten in Brandon. She and Don Carlson were married on July 17, 1972, in Brandon, and they lived there together until moving to Winnipeg in 1974. She taught kindergarten for a total of 10 years, and then devoted her life to her family, caring first for her children and later for her five grandchildren, who lovingly refer to her as Oma and Nana. Loretta is remembered for her beautiful smile and her gentle, soft-spoken personality and as a wonderful friend. She loved reading stories and playing games with her grandchildren. Loretta is survived by her husband, Don Carlson, of Winnipeg; her daughter, Julie and Richard Biljardt, with grandchildren, Jonathan, Daniel and Annalies, of Winnipeg; her son, Robert and Jessica Carlson, with grandchildren, Natalie and Jack, of Indianapolis; her brother Tom Young; nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends. Loretta was predeceased by her father in 1964, her mother in 1987, her sisters, and one of her brothers. Loretta made her choice to serve God when she was 12 years old. Her relationship with God was a priority to her. She was committed to her faith and was an inspiration to many. She is remembered for the care and concern she felt for the little group who met for fellowship in their home as well as for the ministers who visited and stayed regularly. In recent years, due to failing health, she wasn't able to be as active, but still did everything she could to be in fellowship gatherings. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Society of Canada. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017, at 9:00 am at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre,3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery).
