Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMURIEL MARTHA SMITH (nee HOUGH) August 1, 1929 - February 23, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mom, Muriel Smith (87 years) on February 23, 2017. Left to cherish her memory are her children Graham Smith (Marie), and Barb Gottfried (Kurt), three wonderful grandchildren Kristofer, Brittany and Jason, niece Wendy Smith, and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents Elliot and Edna Hough, brother Walter, and beloved husband Don. Born in Winnipeg, Muriel attended Gordon Bell High School where she was affectionately known as Houghie. Growing up during the Depression had a great impact on Muriel causing her to value frugality and to fully appreciate the little things in life. Muriel married her husband Don in 1952 and they settled in Fort Garry to raise their family. Muriel and Don were very outgoing and active in their community. Muriel worked at the Manitoba Pool Elevators, the City of Winnipeg Library, and the Cornish Library where she retired at age 65. Muriel was very health conscious and enjoyed many activities such as swimming, boating, dancing and brisk walks around the neighbourhood. Muriel enjoyed gardening and she was known for her beautiful backyard. Some of Muriel's fondest memories are time spent with family and friends at Hockey Haven, Longbow Lake and Granite Lake, ON. Muriel was gifted with an outstanding personality; strong, practical and principled, as well as kind, caring, friendly and fun loving. Muriel loved to smile and she was a very positive person who rarely complained despite severe back pain in her later years. Muriel (Mom) was truly the beloved Matriarch of our little family and although she will be very sadly missed she will live forever in our hearts. A huge thank you to Barb Hanchard, Barb McBride, Maria, many wonderful neighbours and the excellent staff at Tuxedo Villa. A celebration of her life will be held in the summer at Lake of the Woods, ON. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Muriel and I were friends since we were teenagers and had many fun times together over the years. I had a wonderful visit when I was in Winnipeg last Christmas and I am so glad we had that time together. When Muriel walked into a room, the whole room lit up. She had a wonderful personality and always had a positive attitude. Although I have not lived in Winnipeg for sometime, Muriel and I always kept in touch. I will always cherish the good times Jim and I had with Don and Muriel. Babe Sisler - Posted by: Alice ( Babe) Sisler (Long time friend) on: May 11, 2017

Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of your beloved mother. My mother shared the dining table that your mother was seated at in Tuxedo Villa. Your mom was a charming, intelligent woman with a wonderful singing voice and it was a pleasure to meet her when visiting my mom. My thoughts are with you and your family. - Posted by: Loreen Klassen (Acquaintance ) on: Mar 26, 2017
