HILDA GYARMATHY (nee WITZKE) It is with great sadness and love that we announce the passing of Hilda at the age of 85 on Saturday, March 11, 2017, after many years of declining health. Lovingly cherishing her memory are her children Alice Young (Jeff Wuolle), Monika Boch (Allan), Ralph Gyarmathy (Kathleen); grandchildren Cory Young (Lauren), Chris Young (Vanessa), Brigitte Azaria (Justin), Justin Boch (Bianca Di Michele), Jason and Joshua Gyarmathy; great-grandchildren Harper, Avery, Isla, Peter, Darryl and Charlie. Also surviving are her sister Alice Wermann, brother Willie Witzke (Margaret), sister-in-law Marie Neubauer (Joe), cousin Edwin Mandau and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Hilda is predeceased by her brothers Ernst and Edmund Witzke. Hilda was born and raised in Poland on March 15, 1931 and then moved to Germany. She came to Canada on her own at the age of 20 and lived in Beausejour for a while, eventually finding work as a housekeeper for a prominent family in Winnipeg. She was a very independent, diligent, loving, hardworking woman who took pride in her home, gardening and time spent with family and friends. She loved spoiling her children and friends with baking and goodies. She also enjoyed putting on a new dress and dancing at the German or Polish Hall most weekends. A service will be held on Friday, March 24 at 11:00 a.m. at the Luthern Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Avenue, Winnipeg. Burial will take place at the St. Vital Cemetery, 236 River Road, Winnipeg. The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre, Area 7 - with special thank-you to Jody for all her kindness and love she had shown Hilda over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hilda's memory can be made to the CMHA (http://mbwpg.cmha.ca/) THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I was just looking for an obituary and came across Hilda. I am so very sorry to be reading of Hilda's passing. I have many fond memories of Hilda from when I cared for her in Maples Care Home. My condolences to Hilda's family. RIP Hilda, Janet - Posted by: Janet Skinner (Former care assistant) on: Mar 22, 2017

  • It's been many years since I last saw Tante (Aunt) Hilda. It may have been during the time Monika and Allan Boch were married :). Even though we lived in Winnipeg until I was 6, it was when we visited after moving to Minnesota that I remember Tante Hilde most. She worked hard during the day and then came home to her family. I, too, remember wonderful large family meals downstairs in the basement and impromtu meals in the kitchen when I had my first experience with tomato soup with rice. Yum! Alice, Monika and Ralph (and families) I send my warmest condolences and love during this hard week. - Posted by: Diane (Neubauer) Holzschuh (Niece) on: Mar 20, 2017

  • I just wanted to send my condolences to Alice, Monica, Ralph and families in the passing of their lovely mom ( my aunty). Even though we saw you all only occasionally, I always felt the love of family when we were together. My dad was very sad to hear of his sister's passing, and both he and my mom also send their deepest sympathy. May the memories that you cherish of your mom stay safely tucked away in your hearts, and may she rest in God's eternal peace. • I was sorry to hear of Alice's mom Hilda's passing. She was such a sweet soft spoken woman that will be missed. Some of our fondest teenaged memories are from Alice's House. We would be downstairs and would hear from the top of the stairs .. Alice??? Alice!! Then a flurry of German would follow! We never knew if she was in trouble or if they were just talking about snacks! Speaking of snacks, Hilda by far made the best Corned Beef sandwiches, which I would beg for everything I would visit! I hope your memories of your lovely mother will sustain you during this difficult time. Thinking of you and wishing you Peace. Love, Debbie xo - Posted by: Debbie Powley (Friend) on: Mar 19, 2017

  • Our love and condolences go out to our two nieces Alice, Monika and our nephew Ralf. We have known Hilda as a loving kind Sister-In-Law and a loving Mom to her three children. Hilda loved her family with all that was with in her. She cherished her children and their friends. Hilda was a very giving, kind, hard working gentle person and we will miss her a lot. May God bless here and give her eternal piece. Amen - Posted by: Maria & Joseph Neubauer (Sister & Brother-In-Law) on: Mar 18, 2017
