JACQUELINE ELIZABETH BENSON (nee HOOPER) It is with great sadness we announce the loss of Jacqueline Elizabeth Benson (nee Hooper) after a long battle with cancer, on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at the Victoria Hospital, surrounded by her family, friends and loved ones. Jackie was born on August 26, 1956 in Bristol, England. She moved with her family to Winnipeg in May 1971. It was in Winnipeg where she met life-long friends and her loving husband Donald Benson. Jackie spent her life as a devoted wife, and a loving and caring mother. She placed high importance on her family, staying home to raise her children and running a home daycare. As her children grew up, Jackie opened her home to all of their friends, offering dinner and a safe place to spend the night. Everyone felt loved in Jackie's home and she loved having a full house. Jackie's smile, laughter and love of music will always be remembered by her loving husband of 34 years, Donald; her children, Nicki (Adam) and Kenny (Sarah); grandson Connor; brother Steve (Nancy); sisters, Kim and Milli, nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff at the Victoria Hospital for their help and support during this difficult time. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honour to CancerCare Manitoba or the Winnipeg Pet Rescue. Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • My wonderful sister will be truly missed. I think back to her bright smile and great sense of humour. Growing up as a child she took me every where with her, when she moved out I was at her house as much as possible. I became little sister to all her friends. When our mother died, she filled that role instinctively. When her Nicki came along she gave me the biggest honour of being her Godmother. A pledge I have always taken seriously. When Kenny came along, and I lived do close by, we were together all the time. I have always had a special bond with him. We planned the kids birthday party's together and served as Co-chairs of The Special Events Committe at Lord Roberts, organized a bicycle safety course and a winter carnival, where we sang on stage with the band. Her kids friends all call me Auntie too, and I always felt part of the immediate family. I was at her side for graduations, showers, weddings and Christmases. I will continue to be there for her kids. I consider them her greatest gift to me. I love them with all my heart and couldn't any more if I had given birth to them myself. Jackie will be part of every occasion and will never be forgotten. I love you Jackie 💜 - Posted by: Kim (Sister) on: Mar 30, 2017

  • Jackie brought light to our neighbourhood and family. From nursery school through, our sons spent countless hours together. I remember the first day the boys graduated from recess in the kindergarten quad, to big recess with the Big kids in the field. We laughed as .. both overly protective moms who adored their boys... ran into each other lurking rather furtively around the outside of the schoolyard, looking for glimpses of the boys. Wanting to know there were no bullies around and ready to jump in like warriors if we observed anything untoward. So many halloweens .. birthdays at the Oasis... Kenny in the sun, Will hiding under a tree in the shade with a towel plus hat protecting him from the sun. Family barbecues at Labarriere park.. so many rich and laughter filled times. Jackie was always there with an ear if you needed to talk. Her door was always open to friends and children... and dogs. She will be dearly missed. Much love to Benny and Kenny and Nicki at this sad time. - Posted by: Shirley Grierson and family (Friend and neighbor ) on: Mar 25, 2017

  • Sharing in your sorrow and praying you find peace and comfort in the beautiful memories. Kim - I loved hearing the stories you shared about your sister and I am so glad you were able to hold her hand and be there right till the end with her. Your words- your touch- your face - were some of her last moments and she took those things to heaven. You both deserved that. May your sister RIP. Stay strong. Be brave. Always here for you xo - Posted by: Kim (Friend) on: Mar 25, 2017
