FRANCES LORRAINE KARRAS (nee HENDERS) Peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, March 26, 2017, Lorraine passed away at the age of 81, with family by her side. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 60 years, Jack, son John (Elaine) and their children Lia and Victoria Karras and Erik (Natalie) and Dominique St. Hilaire, daughter Patricia (Don), and their children Sara, Lisa and Whitney Spangelo. She will also be deeply missed by sisters-in-law Joann Barrick and Beryl Henders as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and life-long friends. Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, Francis and Bernice Henders, brother Lloyd Henders, sister-in-law Leona Henders, and brother-in-law Garth Barrick. Lorraine was born into the farming community of Elm Creek, MB on August 13, 1935. She lived on the family farm growing up and attended school in Culross and Elm Creek. She came to Winnipeg after completing Grade 11 to attend the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor of Home Economics degree. She and Jack were married in 1956 and lived in Cleveland, Brandon and Selkirk before settling in Winnipeg. She and Jack have been life-long residents of St. Vital and summer residents of Victoria Beach. In recent years, Jack and Lorraine had been residents at Dakota House. Lorraine was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her career was her family as well as her support for various community services. She was an active volunteer with the St. Vital United Church, the Board of Middlechurch Home and the Victoria General Hospital. In recent years, long standing health issues became more predominant influences in her life, but through it all she showed the incredible self-discipline, quiet determination, resilience and grace that were the foundation of who she was. Lorraine was a gifted cook, baker and seamstress. Her baked goods were a family staple and the special recipes and skills are part of her legacy to her granddaughters. She also enjoyed travel, gardening and her time with friends. The family would like to thank the staff of the Dakota House, Victoria General Hospital and Health Sciences Centre H4 for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lorraine's memory can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, or a charity of one's choice. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 3 at The United Church in Meadowood, 1111 Dakota St. at 2:00 p.m. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I have fond memories of Lorraine. She was loving and caring with a lot of special interests that kept her very busy. It always amazed me knowing that she was diabetic and went big time doing her wonderful baking . She had a spirit of dedication like no other. She will be missed. Our son Kerry was at Camp Stephen in the 70's when her son John was a counsellor. My Sincere Condolences with Love to all family members. • As an impressionable kid of 10, I will never forget the wedding day of Jack and Lorraine. My parents took my brother Ron and me to Elm Creek for that family event; the temperature was over 100 degrees F. and the church was like an oven. The day was completely windless, and the sky clear. Jack and Lorraine took everything in stride; the summer heat did not dampen their spririts, and their love for each other was evident to us all. Their example of commitment to family was one they lived out consistently for the Karras family members in Saskatchewan. When I married my wife Pat in 1971, Jack and Lorraine were there to encourage us; they always stayed in touch, mentoring us in our commitment to family. When our own children began the same journey, Jack and Lorraine came to Banff to pass on their wisdom to the next generation. Lorraine's qualities can be found for you in Proverbs 31:10-31. This entire passage describes her: part of this Scripture portion reads, "She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. ... Her children rise up and bless her, her husband also, saying: "Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all." We are blessed to be a part of your family. • Lorraine and I have been friends since we met at the Women's Residence on our first day as freshmen in Home Economics at the University of Manitoba in 1952. Though our lives have taken very different routes we always managed to keep up with each other's important event and moves and a visit with Lorraine and Jack was an imperative on any return to Winnipeg, when I often was also a guest in their home. Through our University years we were part of a close knit group of friends, sharing meals and unsanctioned evening snacks of toast and peanut butter in each other's rooms. Lorraine was always a loyal and gracious friend. Her self discipline and courage managing diabetes since her young womanhood was exemplary. She will be greatly missed as my husband and I sadly mourn her passing. - Posted by: Gloria Allen (Friend) on: Apr 02, 2017
