SIGNY SVAVA STOKES (August 29. 1940 - March 12, 2017) On March 12, 2017, Signy Svava Stokes (nee Hanson) died peacefully with family by her side at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Signy is survived by daughters, Kirstin (Dan), Adine, (Adam), and grandchildren, Erik, Cecilia, Carter, Ruby and Nolen; and sister Dagny Lenchuck (nee Hanson). Signy was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Stokes; brother, Harold Hanson; and mother, Valdis Svava Hanson. Signy will be remembered for her vivacious love of life, humor and dedication to her family. She loved to laugh nothing made her happier than making those around her happy and comfortable. Signy was proud of her daughters, but proudest of all to be Amma to her five grandchildren. She had a career in medical administration and worked throughout her life, and she was active in the Eastern Star, in addition to her many hours of hosting and fun with the Mighty Fife and Drum Corps "family". Although Signy spent a few years of her life living outside of Winnipeg (Victoria, BC and briefly in Calgary, AB), she was first and foremost a "St. James Girl". Peter and Signy moved to Ft. Garry in 1965 after they married, but many trips to St. James to visit the Benedictson family; Jim, Mary, and daughters Kristine and Stephanie kept Signy in touch with her roots. Signy's family would like to thank the staff at Deer Lodge Centre for their excellent and compassionate care over these past two years, and Signy's numerous medical providers, Dr. Patricia Harris and Dr. Michael Stephensen, as well as the Winnipeg South home care team. A memorial service will be held at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue on April 8, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. The family suggests that memorials be made to Deer Lodge Centre, the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of one's choice. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • We had many fun times with Signy and Peter over the years and enjoyed their friendship. So sorry for your loss Kirstin, Adine and family. Yes, Signy was certainly proud to be Amma to her grandkids. Living in Gimli, I always enjoyed talking to Sig with her Icelandic roots. We are unable to attend the service as we are still in Mesa but our thoughts are with you all. - Posted by: Shirley & Dave Edmonds (Friend) on: Apr 05, 2017

I will be thinking of her and you. I enjoyed her stories of you and your families. My sincere condolences. 💞 - Posted by: Mildred Hiebert (I worked with Signey at Golden Links Lodge) on: Apr 04, 2017
