SHEILA BRIEN (nee WILKES) 1940 - 2017 On Friday, March 31, 2017 Sheila lost her battle against a number of medical conditions which, combined, were too much for her to overcome. Sheila was born in Winnipeg, on January 17, 1940 to Dorothy and Richard Wilkes. She was predeceased by her parents, and her brother Donald Wilkes. Sheila is survived by her husband Wayne, her daughter Maureen Hamonic and son-in-law Rene, her sons Richard and Robert Brien, and two grandsons who were the lights of her life, Justin and Connor Hamonic. In addition to extended family of cousins, nephews and nieces, there are some honorary family like her goddaughter Jennifer Leslie, and her sister Laurie. She grew up on Beverly Street and was intensely proud of being a "Westender". She graduated from Daniel McIntyre in 1957 after schooling at Greenway and General Wolfe schools. In 1963, Sheila moved to Montreal. She got a job at Standard Life Assurance where she made many friends and met Wayne who would become her husband of 52 years. After a short courtship, they returned to Winnipeg to be married in St. Matthews Anglican Church in June of 1965. After the wedding, they settled in Montreal where they started their family. In 1969, they moved to Winnipeg, completed their family with one more child, and rekindled Sheila's friendships from childhood. Sheila truly valued the friendships that began in her younger days and have lasted until now. Sheila was a great mother, strict but fair and fiercely protective. She emphasized the value of education and the need to live by a set of principles. She was a volunteer Brownie leader and became a lifelong member of the PEO sisterhood. When the children got older. Sheila re-entered the workforce joining Park Realty. We had a good life in Winnipeg. Great neighbours and good friends. The children all completed their educations with degrees from University of Manitoba. There were many family car trips to both East and West coasts and all points in between. The family would like to thank the staff at Grace Hospital for the care they provided to Sheila. Per Sheila's wishes there will be no funeral service. There will be a visitation on Friday, April 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway. If you wish, a donation to your favourite charity or the Humane Society in Sheila's name would be appreciated. Wayne, memories of growing up together in Virden, going to the same high school, briefly to the same university, and then working together at Standard Life. That is where we met Sheila and followed you both through your married days, your life in Winnipeg, seeing your children growing up, and trying to keep up with your grand kids - may hockey live on. Although, frequent visitation became difficult, you and Sheila did a very nice job of coming East many times and we were always so glad to see you both. The next time we get together, Sheila will be missing but remembered. Our sincere sympathy and condolences to you and your family. All our love, Ken, Joan, Kevin and Lianne, Kim and Dave - Posted by: Ken (Friend) on: Apr 05, 2017
