Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCARMEN SYLVIA LAWRENCE (nee de FREITAS) December 29, 1916 April 7, 2017 In her 101st year, Carmen Sylvia Lawrence left us on April 7, 2017 to be with her parents, siblings and other family previously departed. Beloved mother of Enid Schwandt (John), Barry Lawrence and Malcolm Lawrence (Margaret Shea); grandmother of Michael Schwandt (Jillian), Marika Warner (Adam) and David Lawrence; great-grandmother of Noah Wiklund Schwandt. Also remembered with love by her nephews and nieces in Canada, the United States and the West Indies. Carmen was born in Montreal and spent most of her life there, a city she held in great affection. Her parents were Robert Michael de Freitas and Rosa F. Renaud. Active in church, community and her sorority, she always had a wide circle of good friends. She loved to entertain those friends and family, as an inveterate hostess. Late in life, Carmen quite courageously moved to Winnipeg to be near her daughter Enid and family there. She continued her winning ways there, retaining old friendships and making new. She will be missed by many. Cremation has taken place. A family service will be held at a later date in Montreal where Carmen will be interred with her parents. Mrs. Lawrence was a close friend of my grandmother Claire Schwende. I have very fond memories of visiting her home in Laval as a child. She had a peace about her that I will never forget. She was a truly beautiful and welcoming person. Most recently I had the pleasure of paying her a visit back in 2013/2014 while I was in Winnipeg on business. She offered me brandy and we looked at old pictures. My sincerest condolences to her family and loved ones. You were very fortunate to have her. Thinking of the changes that she has seen in her lifetime, it makes me hopeful for the future. I will always treasure the moments shared with my grandmother's friend Mrs. Carmen Lawrence. - Posted by: Karl Bruce (Family friend) on: Aug 27, 2019
