ALFRED GEORGE GOEBEL Alfred George Goebel, aged 92, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2017 at the Victoria Hospital. He was predeceased into death by his loving wife Rita; his parents William and Bernadette; his stepbrother Ernest; and stepsisters Edna, Hilda, and Marguerite. Left to cherish his memory are his sisters Irene, Dorothy (Scott), and Evelyn (Robert); and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Alfred attended school in St. Boniface and upon graduation from St. Boniface College in 1944, enlisted into the Army Regular Officers' Training Program. He was honourably discharged in 1945 at the end of the war. He went on to earn his Bachelor and Master of Education degrees (B.Ed. and M.Ed.) from the University of Manitoba. Alfred devoted his professional life to education. Most of his career was spent with the St. James-Assiniboia School Division in Winnipeg; first as a teacher, then as school principal, and finally as school superintendent. Upon retirement in 1980, Alfred and his wife Rita began to spend their winters in Texas where he could pursue his love of golf on courses that are always green. He also enjoyed fishing, and looked forward to his yearly fishing trips to Clear Water Bay with his close friends Tom and George. Alfred will be remembered for his many kindnesses. Many disadvantaged children, particularly in Ethiopia, benefited from his generosity. He will be greatly missed. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernadette Parish, 820 Cottonwood Road in Windsor Park. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alfred's memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Desjardins 204-233-4949 1-888-233-4949 www.desjardinsfuneralchapel.ca

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Sincere condolences to the family. I have such fond memories of Oncle Pitou -- as a child going skeet shooting with the uncles and aunts 'sur la petite montagne'; scratching his scalp after which he would give me .25; his jokes; the smell of his cigar; his kind smile; the bowl of jelly beans on the kitchen table; and later, he always asked with interest about my three boys - he called them Wolfgang Amadeus and Mozart. Merci mononcle for the memories, for your kindness. - Posted by: Rosemarie Péloquin (niece) on: Apr 19, 2017

  • Our condolances to the family. Al was a fine educational leader and mentor to his staff. He was an approachable and supportive person. It was great to have the opportunity to meet up with Al and Rita a couple of times in Texas once we were all retired. We have and will continue to fondly remember him.
