Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER HENRY (WOLODYMYR HENKO) KOCHAN June 18, 1930 - April 18, 2017 Suddenly but peacefully, Walter passed away on April 18, 2017, with his loving family by his side at the Victoria Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Janet; three sons, Paul (Tamara), David and Michael (Lisa); and one daughter Brenda Pennock (Trent); as well as six grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Julia, Kennedy, Katelyn and Stella; and one sister Pat Zabolotny (Richard) and family. Walter was predeceased by his mother Julia in 1994 and father Peter in 2002 as well as his beloved Uncle Tony (Anton Myroslav) Carey in 2002. Walter was born and raised in Winnipeg's North End and attended King Edward, Faraday and Isaac Newton schools before graduating in 1954 from the University of Manitoba with a B.Pharm., winning the Faculty gold medal for highest academic achievement. He began his career as an apprentice at the Winnipeg General Hospital in 1954, where met his future wife Janet, and they were married on May 29, 1954. He continued practicing until 1998 at a number of pharmacies most notably the Boyd Dispensary. Walter was proud of his career in pharmacy and was very active in the Pharmacy community, such as organizing many class reunions and contributing to the new Pharmacy Building at the University. He was a firm believer in the immense value of education and instilled that belief in all of us. Dad was also proud of his roots and his Ukrainian heritage. Other than this past year, he lived his entire life in the North End and could not imagine living anywhere else. Dad loved his Ukrainian folk music as well as anything by Glenn Miller. He learned to speak Ukrainian before English and continued to use the language his whole life. As a child of the Depression, Dad always had empathy for those less fortunate and gave generously to a variety of charities. Dad was an unpretentious, cautious and conservative man. Mostly though, Dad was just a loving family man and was proud of all of his children and grandchildren and extended family. He constantly fretted and worried about all of us. When any of us needed his help, he was always there with loving support. Dad we love you and we will you miss you. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice. So sorry to hear of Walter's death and our condolences go to Janet and family. We have known Walter and Janet for over 60 years and it was always a pleasure to meet them at Pharmacy events and other social occasions. Always enjoyed Walter's quiet humour. He was always dependable and could be counted on to get the job done. A good pharmacist and clever, as shown by his scholastic record. One of the good guys !
