MARGARETHE REITZ Peacefully on April 6, 2017, to the strains of Wien Wien nur Du Alien, our dear Mother, Oma, and Tick Tock at the age of 96 left this world to rejoin her sisters, brothers and most importantly her beloved husband, Nik. Margarethe was born and raised in Vienna, Austria, a city that always held a special place within her heart. After The Second World War she made the courageous decision to leave Austria to seek a better life in Canada. Landing in Winnipeg as a poor immigrant Margarethe and her husband Nik worked long hours and built a successful fur business that ran for many years in the Riverview Osborne neighborhood. In retirement Margarethe and Nik moved to their cottage in the Keewatin area, where a lifetime of cherished memories were built with her family. She loved her time there swimming, cross country skiing, and having her children and grandchildren around her. Margarethe also made her biggest dream a reality, and she and Nik spent several of their happiest times wintering in Hawaii. A truly forward thinking woman, Margarethe's experiences with war and poverty led her to be very tolerant and open minded. She kept a keen eye on politics and world issues, always siding with the oppressed over the oppressor. A feminist before her time, she was a role model for her daughters and many of the women who knew her. Can't was not a word in Margarethe's vocabulary. If she was told she couldn't, she would just work hard and prove that she could. Although she has now left this world, this feisty, courageous and loving woman will forever live in the hearts of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her legacy will continue to shape all of us who knew her, loved her, and understood how lucky we were to have lived our lives with her in it. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • To Margaret's family Margaret and Nik picked mum and I up from the Canadian pacific train station on the labour day Saturday 1954, and our families were friends ever since. There were many dinners and card games. Our two families supported the creation of the Austrian club. Your family became our neighbours at the winnipeg river with their cottage. So many memories. Mum and I are sorry for your loss and send our condolences, just remember Margaret is now at peace. - Posted by: Marlies Nix & Hermine Steinbrecher (Friends) on: Apr 25, 2017
