Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLESLIE GEORGE SLINGSBY August 11, 1923 - April 21, 2017 Sadly, we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Les Slingsby on Friday, April 21, 2017 at the age of 93 years. Predeceased by his loving wife of 49 years, Kathleen (nee Farley), parents Fred and Rose Slingsby, and beloved brother Clifford, Les is survived by three daughters, Linda Grayston (Doug), Cynthia Garofalo (Lloyd Cardwell), and Charlene Slingsby (Chris Aubrey), four grandchildren, Heather Dzwonek, Amanda Guerreiro (Bob), Donna Garofalo and Mark Slingsby Behrendt (Candice), 10 great-grandchildren, Lucas, Autumn, Mason, Anthony, Noah and Zoe Garofalo, Erik Dzwonek, Alexander and Addison Guerreiro and Stella Behrendt, and many nieces, nephews and godchildren. Born August 11, 1923 in Winnipeg, Les lived his entire life in Weston. He was an integral part of the community, attending Cecil Rhodes School, working at City of Winnipeg Tecumseh yards for 33 years, and serving on many community committees as well as serving as an elected member of the Winnipeg School Division #1 School Board. During the Second World War Les was an original member of 435 Squadron "Chinthe" Transport and Rescue Squadron serving in the Burma Campaign as a Leading Air Craftsman. In 2012 Les was presented with The Love of Caring Award from the Fred Douglas Foundation as well as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal honouring his unparalleled lifetime of service. Les lived by example as a kind, modest and honourable man. Les and Kathy met in 1946, married in 1950 and raised their family: three daughters and a dog named Rex. Through the church they met their lifelong friends: June/Keith Cory and Jean/Jack Rocky. When Kathy needed him most, Les cared for her with love and commitment until her death in 1999. Les was a good neighbour and friend and our family's friendship with the Webb family has spanned four generations. As a lifelong learner, Les passed his love of life and adventure to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing with the Alexander boys, camping, and swimming with the MB Masters Swim Club. In his later years he water skied at age 60, white water rafted through Hell's Gate at 65, climbed the Great Wall at 78, saw the great pyramids of Egypt at 80 and parasailed in Mexico at 82. Many summers were spent at his cabin at Black's Point, where grandchildren and granddogs were always welcome. Les was grateful to: St. Thomas Anglican Church community and ministry team, home support of Dee, Carol, Daphne, Mike and Rick and home care aides that cared for him, and the kind staff of the Riverview Health Centre. A service of remembrance will take place at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. with interment following at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christmas Cheer Board, PO Box 51089, Winnipeg, MB R2X 3C6, or a charity of your choice. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

I was saddened to hear of Les Slingsby's passing. What a wonderful, supportive and community minded man. I have known the Slingsby family my whole life and been enriched by Les and Kathy's lives.Growing up in Weston there was nothing they wouldn't do to support family, friends and the community. Les's work, particularly on the Winnipeg School Board , required much dedication and hard work. In retirement his work for the people of Weston and Brooklands never stopped- always lobbying for positive change and growth. Les was so proud of his family - his 3 girls and all the grandchildren and great grandchildren that followed. I thank him for the support he gave my parents,Ed and Ria Hetke through the years. He was a great friend to them. My regret is that I am out of town in Calgary tomorrow and not be able to attend the service. Linda,Cindy and Charlene please accept my love and sympathy.
