LOUISE ALICE MCLACHLAN (nee BATEMAN) August 12, 1925 - March 3, 2017 It is with much sadness that we announce Mom's passing on Friday March 3, 2017 at Grace Hospital, after a short illness, at the age of 91 years young. She will be dearly missed by her husband of 63 years Donald; children, Bruce, Winnipeg and Colleen (Gregg) Fraser, Mayne Island, BC; cherished granddaughters, Jane Fraser, Victoria, BC and Grace Fraser, Mayne Island, BC; special brother-in-law Ron O'Donovan; nephews, nieces, cousins and best friend Martha Houston. Mom was born in Kenora, the only child of Ann Hill and Harold Bateman and raised in Winnipeg on Selkirk Avenue and in East Kildonan. After high school, mom moved to Flin Flon with her parents for a couple of years, working in the mine, then a brief stint in Kitchener, before returning to Winnipeg to work at Eatons until she married Dad in 1953. Charleswood soon became home, building the only house they ever lived in, on Wexford Street. Mom worked at Sears for over 20 years, retiring in 1986. Summers were spent at Westhawk Lake for 45 years, where Mom made lifelong friendships. Mom was an active Charter member of the Eastern Star Friendship Chapter #67. She had just achieved 54 years as a member and was the oldest living Charter member in Manitoba. She was a cornerstone of her chapter, loved by all. Mom was also a member of the Shrine Women's Auxiliary, the Khartum Komedians Ladies Auxiliary, Daughters of the Nile Sphinx Temple #116 and an honorary member of Job's Daughters Bethel #13. Many sales and raffles benefited from Mom's beautiful knitted sweaters and her famous shawls. Right up until just weeks before her passing, mom was still taking the Handi-Transit to the Reh-Fit Centre three days a week, where she was known as the "Knitting Lady". She loved her time with her Reh-Fit friends. Mom loved all her homecare workers, you were all very special to her and she appreciated everything you did for her, thank you. Special thanks also to Mom's friends and neighbours who have been so helpful and kind over the years. Thank you to Mom's Eastern Star family, you kept her going and active and she loved you. We were very blessed to have special friends and family who spent time with Mom near the end. Also, our gratitude to the Drs. and nurses on 3 North Grace Hospital for your care of our Mom. Mom always carried dog biscuits in her pockets, although she never had a dog. Donations to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 0R3 would be appreciated as Mom was a regular donor, or the Eastern Star Chalet 525 Cathcart Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3R 0S6. Cremation has taken place. A private interment will be at Brookside Cemetery. Memorial Service on Friday May 5, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 3830 Roblin Blvd., Charleswood.
