Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROGER CARBOTTE October 22, 1940 - April 28, 2017 Our dear Roger passed peacefully away after a short stay at Concordia Hospital. Roger was born in Antler, Saskatchewan to Léon and Pauline (Cancade) who, shortly thereafter, moved to Manitoba. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and Physics, University of Manitoba. After completing his Novitiate as a Marianist Brother, was awarded a Master's Degree in Mathematics, St. Mary's University of San Antonio, Texas. He later was awarded a Master's Degree in Computer Science and completed the course work requirement for a Doctoral Degree in Mathematics, University of Manitoba. Roger taught at Louis Riel and at Kildonan East Collegiates, worked as a Science Consultant for the River East School Division, and Mathematics Consultant for the Manitoba Department of Education. For the last 15 years of his career, he worked as a lecturer in the Mathematics Department, University of Manitoba, where he mostly worked with Aboriginal students, on and off campus. He truly enjoyed playing cards and was still playing with friends just a few days prior to his passing. Golf and sailing were his passion. He marvelled at his grandchildren, played guitar, sang and loved dancing and treating family to fine dining. Roger will be lovingly remembered by his partner, Florence Girouard, daughter Christine, son, Daniel (Lisa), stepdaughters Nadine (Joseph) Mortella and Colette (Richard) Jorgensen, brothers Paul (Adeline), Dom Marcel Carbotte, Jules (Ramona), and sister Anne-Marie (Bernard) Bohémier, one grandchild, five step-grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, as well as many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Father Marcel Carrière, will be celebrated Thursday, May 4, 2017 with Eulogy at 10:00 a.m. followed by Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Cathedral. A late afternoon private family Interment will take place at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. I did not know of his passing. I actually thought I could see him and thank him at our LRC reunion. He had such an influence on my life. I liked math because of him. He was my homeroom teacher in Grade 11. He sang for us and played guitar. Tu me manqueras cher Roger. Merci de ce que tu nous a donné comme prof et comme être humain... So sad to hear of your passing. We were friends for many years. We taught together, we laughed together, we travelled to Europe together. We were with your family when your two beautiful children came into your life. You had a brilliant mind and many students at Provencer and Louis Riel were fortunate to have you share your knowledge with them. Unfortunately, life moved on and we did not stay in touch over the last years but we assure you, you truly are remembered. Roger and I shared a room at the Marianist novitiate in Wisconsin from 1960-1961. It was a difficult year for me and I left after ten months, but Roger was always my go-to guy for help, friendship, and support. We played many chess games (which he always won) and many bridge games (which he also always won). I am not the least surprised that he became a great and inspirational teacher. I have thought of him often during the intervening 50 years and wondered what became of him. I am too late to renew an acquaintance, but I can still assure his family and loved ones that he was someone I never forgot. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: John Schaeffer (former roommate at the Marianist novitiate) on: May 04, 2017

My father worked with Roger at Kildonan East. I was sorry to hear of his passing. From what I remember my dad enjoyed working with Roger in the math department. Rest in peace. You will be missed! Roger was the best math teacher I have ever had. When I was a high school student at Provencher School (precursor to Louis Riel) I had little or no interest in mathematics. He helped me after class as often as I needed to improve not only my skills in Math but in higher learning. In 1970 or so Roger took a sabbatical leave from his teaching duties to attend L' Universite de Fribourg in Switzerland, I took the opportunity to visit him there and spend time discussing life, his possible future as well as mine. I soon after enrolled at L'Universite de Fribourg and hence the start of my voyage that would lead to the profession I have truly enjoyed for over 43yrs. Roger you were the spark that lite this passion in me. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! May your soul be with our Lord and may His protection and Love surround your family! Roger was my Physics teacher at Louis Riel Collegiate in the 70's. He was one of my most favorite teachers. One year he challenged us to build a Geodesic Dome out of cardboard. If memory serves me the base of the dome was around 30'. The entire dome was made of cardboard and bolts to put the triangles together. The final product was erected in the school courtyard and one of the students actually climbed along the edge of the cardboard triangles to the top of the dome. Roger was definitely a teacher who came up with some of the greatest ideas to get his students involved in the sciences and math. You have shaped many lives and will not be forgotten. - Posted by: Conrad J Wyrzykowski (Student) on: May 02, 2017

Roger was one of my favourite teachers when I attended Kildonan East. I chose his optional Math 305 course. He held a casino day to exemplify statistics and probabilities. Roger had all sorts of treats we could buy with our winnings. I asked what happened if we lost all of our money. His reply was that we could leave. Five minutes later, after losing all my money to long shots I was off to the park. Thanks for the lesson Roger! :) I was also lucky enough to be a coworker of his when I worked at Kildonan East a few years later. I will always remember you Roger. - Posted by: Gary Komadowski (Student and Coworker) on: May 02, 2017
