JULIE ANN DOLNY (nee PEPPER) "I may cry and I will die, But my spirit is the soul of every spring, Watch for me and you will see That I'm present in the songs that children sing." - Maya Angelou Julie was born August 11, 1957 in Detroit, Michigan. She died suddenly May 4, 2017 surrounded by her family. Julie leaves behind her husband of 36 years, Raymond, sons Jason and Stefan (Deneen Stewart), grandson Carter; sisters Mary Kosta, Petchie (Jim) Hawkins, Jane (Mark) Ireland, and brother David Pepper (Michael Graydon). She also leaves nephew Tony (Jackie) Hawkins and great-nephew Ulysses, nieces Marita Obst, Lauren Kosta and Claire Hawkins and her young nephew Tristan Ireland. Julie was predeceased by her brother, Damien in 1991, her mother, Marie in 2002 and her father, Evan in 2013 and brother-in-law Bob Kosta in 2009. Julie and her husband Raymond were true partners in every sense of the word. They were each other's sounding board and best friends. They did everything together from the weekly shopping and cleaning to the raising of their sons, Jason and Stefan who were the most important people in her world. More recently, they were an integral part of the raising of their grandson Carter. In keeping with her strong belief in family supporting each other, Stefan, his loving partner, Deneen and Carter moved in with Julie and Ray while they saved for their own home. Julie took great delight in her daily interactions with Carter and he benefited immensely from his special time with Nana. Julie was warm, loving, kind and hospitable to both friends and family and was much loved and respected in return. She and Ray hosted many family gatherings over the years and instilled a strong sense of tradition in all. Julie was strong beyond measure, yet soft with all those she loved dearly. This was evidenced as she became the main caregiver for her father during his final years. Julie spent 35 years as a highly respected professional in the education of children, working many of those years for Winnipeg One School Division. Julie was a passionate and caring educator and this was made very clear by the tributes she received upon her retirement in 2016. Even outside of school she was a guide and mentor to siblings, nieces and nephews. A ferocious advocate for social justice, she was an inspiration to those open to learning right from wrong. In keeping with Julie's wishes, no service will take place. There will be a viewing for family and friends on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg, MB with private cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Stephen Lewis Foundation or any social justice cause of choice in Julie's memory. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I met Julie almost 50 years ago as 1 of the 6 blonde haired Pepper kids in Brandon, MB. She was my friend Petchie's older sister. My 2 brothers and I bonded with the Pepper family immediately. We spent many hours with them biking, singing, hanging out & playing at the creek!! Halloween at their house was always the best! Our deepest condolences go out to all of her family & friends. Julie was a wonderful person who will be so missed. Take Care! - Posted by: Ronalyn Bradshaw (Life Long Friend) on: May 11, 2017

  • My profession is a special one, and I LOVE it! I am not even sure that I can explain the impact that we sometimes have on our clients, or the impact that they have on us... When somebody new comes into your salon for a service, they give you their trust in your ability to give the best shampoo on earth, to help them feel welcome and relaxed, and to sometimes, transform their inner spirit into their new self... We have a license to 'touch'... And if you are lucky enough, a friendship is born, and a time in life is shared. My Dearest Julie... You had an appointment with me this coming Thursday! I will miss your presence in my home SO much, as you and I have shared many stories over the years!!! My dearest Ray, Jason, Stefan, Deneen and precious, little Carter! Julie was so proud of each and every one of you... she spoke of all of you so highly, every time we had our visits! RIP, my beautiful friend! My heart is broken... - Posted by: Denise Letienne (Friend) on: May 08, 2017

  • I met Julie through her son Jason. Jason and I completed our Masters degrees together at Carleton University. Jason and I were both "out of towners" in the program and leaned on each other for moral and emotional support throughout those stressful years. Julie, even though she didn´t know me at first, demonstrated her caring personality. She would send me small gifts, send her regards and ask Jason how I was doing. It made me feel like I had an aunt who encouraged me and watched over me. When I left the country to do research, she took care of and eventually adopted and cared for my cat Virty. I couldn´t have been more thankful to someone for caring for, and loving, an extended part of my family. Even though she lived far away, Julie kept a close watch on me, picking up owl tokens when shopping to send to me over christmas (she knew thanks to Jason that I had a love for owls). The last time I got to see and share some time with her was in Ottawa when she travelled and stayed with her son to help him move, packing his things, and organizing his new apartment while he went to work. She really was a truly special, bubbly, happy and caring human being. It aches me to know she is no longer with us, but I find comfort in the fact that she did not have to suffer. She will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to the family. - Posted by: Kirsten Francescone (Friend of the family) on: May 07, 2017
