ELSIE SMITH July 20, 1917 - May 8, 2017 It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Elsie Smith at the age of 99 years (two months shy of 100 years). Elsie was predeceased by her loving husband Leslie Smith in 2011, and is survived by her children Lyle (Yvonne), Glen (Karen), Margaret (Ram), and Wayne (Val); brother Geoffrey (Frances); grandchildren Richard, Shawna, Darryl, Dave, Tracy, Danielle, Randy, Ashley, Latisha, and Crystal; great-grandchildren Kara, Jordan, Cole, Krysten, Micheal, Leah, Kennedy, Parker, James, Beckman, and Makayla. Elsie was predeceased by her parents William and Ivy Casson; brothers George, Harold and Lorne; sister Alfreda; and granddaughter Leila. Elsie grew up on a farm in Belleview, Manitoba and worked on a farm in her teenage years where she met the love of her life, Les and married in 1940. Les served in the Second World War and upon his return they farmed with Les' father in Saskatchewan for a year and then moved onto Elkhorn, Manitoba where they farmed for 26 years. She was an excellent cook, quilter, craftswoman, canner, seamstress, and gardener, meanwhile raising their four children. In 1973, they moved to Virden where she was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, loved fishing with the family and friends, and ceramics became a passion. After Les retired they moved to Winnipeg where she loved those family times, playing cards and having coffee with her Zellers' friends, going to events at The Royal Canadian Legion, Henderson Highway Branch No. 215. In 2011, after Les passed away, Elsie moved from the house to Concordia Village where she met a wonderful group of friends - both residents and staff alike. We will certainly miss all those sayings, i.e. Big Deal, her feisty way, care packages of homemade buns and cookies, weekly trips to Walmart, playing bingo and card games with friends at Concordia Village, and crafty items. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the Health Sciences Centre (Gold Team and Palliative Care Team and support staff), along with Breast Health Centre and Dr. B. D. Wiesenthal for their compassionate care. A celebration of Elsie's life will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Concordia Village, 1125 Molson Street, Winnipeg. Visitor or staff parking available. In Elsie's memory, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or a charity of your choice. Elsie's commitment to serve her community through working with the Legion and its Ladies Auxiliary is a powerful statement about her spirit... only illness kept her helping hands close to her side. I am grateful for the times we spent together in the Legion 215 kitchen, fundraisers, and our monthly Auxiliary meetings. - Posted by: Linda Kohut (Legion 215 Ladies Auxiliary ) on: May 16, 2017

Margaret, Lyle, Glen, Wayne, my heart goes out to you in sympathy and understanding having dealt with losing our Mum (Eileen) just 15 months ago. There will be many memories come into your mind in the next many months of times that are long past but the experiences you shared as a family will bounce back and seem as real as yesterday. Our families were closely intertwined it seems over the last fifty some years. There were few milestones in the lives of the Smith Family that the Johnson's were not invited to attend. Mrs. Smith helped Mum with sewing bridesmaid dresses for my wedding 50 years ago. She was a meticulous seamstress for sure. She made delicious baked goods. She put her heart into all things housekeeping and made bringing up a family seem like a piece of cake. She was kind and generous and I feel privileged to have known her. Your parents made a lasting positive impact on my life and will be long remembered. Keep their memory alive in the minds of the younger generation. The Smiths leave behind a worthy history not to be forgotten. - Posted by: Joy Kring (nee Johnson) (Neighbour & friend from the Elkhorn farming days) on: May 14, 2017

I certainly do miss Elsie and her sayings around the Village. She was an amazing , strong lady for her years. I have several of her crocheted tea-towels in my kitchen and trailer and I think of her fondly every time I dry my hands on one of them. I was blessed to know Elsie and your family ! Many hugs and condolences ..Terrol - Posted by: Terrol Rogers (Receptionist at Concordia Village) on: May 13, 2017
