MARTIN (MARTY) LEWIS VOLKMAR 1944 - 2017 On May 7, 2017, Martin (Marty) passed away peacefully with his loving wife and son by his side. Marty was survived by his wife of 45 years, Judy; his son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Sarah, and his two beautiful granddaughters, Natalia and Tayah. He was also survived by his brothers, Arne (Linda); Fred (Jean); Glen (Elaine), and Karl (Wendy), and Judy's siblings: Linda (Bud); Randy (Donna); Julie; Rick (Denise); sister-in-law, Adeline (Roger), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Helen Volkmar; mother-in-law, Nell; father-in-law, Joe, and his brothers-in-law, Roger and Jim. Marty was born on July 14, 1944 in Dryden, Ontario. He spent his early years on the family homestead in Wabigoon, Ontario, under the watchful eyes of his parents and maternal grandparents. Being the child of a father in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Marty soon found himself moving regularly across Canada. During his childhood, Marty resided in Edmonton, Alberta (1948-1955); Bagotville, Quebec (1955-1956); Cardinal Heights, suburb of Ottawa, Ontario (1956-1962), and eventually in 1962, he settled in Winnipeg at the Winnipeg Air Base MDPR's. In 1966 he and his family moved to 556 Oakdale Drive in Charleswood. In 1966, Marty was hired by ITT Grinnell (the Company banner would progress from ITT Grinnell, Grinnell Supply Sales, and Mueller Flow Control to Flocor Inc.) into the accounting department. Due to his outgoing personality, he quickly moved to inside sales and eventually to outside sales. In January, 1993, Marty was promoted to Branch Manager in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He continued in this capacity until 1996 when he was further promoted to Regional Manager for Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Northwestern Ontario. In 2004, Marty was given additional managerial responsibility for the Province of Alberta. In 2011, after 45 years of service, he formally retired from Flocor Inc., but remained a consultant for the company until 2013 when he took full retirement. In 1967, Marty first met the love of his life, Judy; however, it took an invitation to her university graduation in 1969 for their love to truly blossom, leading to their marriage on June 26, 1971. In 1974, with the early passing of Judy's mother, Marty and Judy welcomed Judy's siblings into their home, becoming legal guardians to Randy, Julie, and Rick. On June 13, 1975, Marty and Judy celebrated the birth of their son, Michael Joseph and he was welcomed home to a house full of love. Marty was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to his hometown teams - the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose, and the Winnipeg Goldeyes. He enjoyed nothing more than dropping a line in the water and spending the afternoon fishing, whether it was jigging for walleye on the Little Saskatchewan River or down-rigging for salmon off the Queen Charlotte Islands. Marty enjoyed his time at the family cottage at Brandosa Beach. It was there where he was able to enjoy peace and solitude; reading, gardening and enjoying time with his granddaughters, Natalia and Tayah at the beach. It wasn't until later in life that Marty and Judy truly experienced the joys of travel. They enjoyed cruises to the Panama Canal and several cruises to Alaska. In 2010, Marty and Judy took a family trip to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and continued to visit for a month every year. It was there that he and Judy had some of their most memorable moments together. Marty always said that he had a great life. The family would like to thank the staff at Cancer Care Manitoba (McDermot Ave) and Grace Hospital for the care and compassion they provided to Marty. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Marty's name may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, The Humane Society or the charity of your choice. A funeral service will take place on Monday, May 15, 2107 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
