SYLVIA GRACE NICKERSON (née WORTHEN) September 26, 1925 - May 25, 2017 A kind and gentle lady has peacefully passed and will be truly missed by her daughter Sandra; son Peter (Vivienne); grandchildren, Laura (Craig), Graeme (Sarah) and Emily; three great- grandchildren; as well as sister-in-law Lynn and nieces and nephews of Nova Scotia. Mom was born a Blue-Noser in Crowell, Nova Scotia the youngest of four sisters. After completing her schooling, Mom moved to Halifax where she trained to become a Registered Nurse. She fondly related stories of her time working at the Grace Hospital in Obstetrics and later in Family Medicine. Mom met George William (Bill), at a square dance and they were married in 1959, starting their life together in Wolfville, then moving their young family to Brampton, then Ottawa and eventually to Winnipeg in 1980. Devoted to her family, Mom worked hard to create a loving home in which to raise her children and later doted on her grandchildren, of whom she was very proud, and then she was always amazed that she became a great-grandmother. Though moving progressively west, Nova Scotia was never far from Mom's heart, and she travelled frequently home to visit family, and spend time on the white sand beaches of the South Shore. Mom shared Dad's love of the outdoors, enjoying hiking, canoeing and camp fires as they explored Canada. Central to her life was her faith and church community at Broadway-First Baptist Church, where she was an active member of the choir and the Women's Christian Fellowship. Mom maintained her independence well into her 80s and for a time resided at All Seniors Care Sturgeon Creek II, where Joanne and her staff provided superb care. In the last three years, Mom received exceptional, professional and sympathetic care from the amazing team of 2 West, Riverview Health Centre. A memorial and celebration of Mom's life will be held at Broadway-First Baptist Church, 790 Honeyman Avenue on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Osteoporosis Canada (www.osteoporosis.ca).
