CHARLES ROSS (SMITTY) SMYTH 1932 - 2017 Sadly but peacefully, Smitty, born June 16, 1932, passed away surrounded by family on May 27, 2017 at Seven Oaks General Hospital. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 64 years, Jean; his children Valerie Smyth, Debra Lefebvre (Roger), Gerrie-Lee MacIver (Keith), Sally Kaspick (Glenn) and Shauna Isfjord (Tim); his grandchildren Cory (Brandy), Jason (Anna), Barrett (Rachael), Pamela (Kegan), Dionne (Tom), Colin, Matthew (Melissa), Dana, Kelly, Colbie (Alicia), Logan (Britney) and Keenan (Morgan); along with nine great-grandchildren, his brothers Ray (Alexis) and John, and his in-laws Sonia, Elsie (Jerry), Joe and Ruth. Smitty was predeceased by his son Kim, his parents Gordon and Alice, his sister Yvonne, his brother Kent, his parents-in-law Joe and Anne Sitko, and sister-in-law Ethel. At 19 years old Smitty started his career as a barber, operating his first shop on the Air Base in MacDonald, Manitoba back when a haircut was 45 cents. In 1954 he moved to Alberta, where he operated the barber shop on the Cold Lake Air Base for 18 years. During this time he also owned and operated a car wash, many commercial and residential buildings, and numerous penny candy machines. In 1973 he moved back to Manitoba to pursue a career in real-estate and became Castlewood Homes number one salesperson in 1975. In 1981, during his semi-retirement, he converted his motorhome to the "Perogy Kitchen". Smitty and Jean went into business together and took the Kitchen on the road throughout western Canada for 15 years. In 1996 he retired again while still operating Der-Kel Enterprises, a real estate management company started by himself and two of his brothers. In his full retirement, Smitty enjoyed spending time with his family, as well as gardening, building yard ornaments and cooking his "soup". In lieu of a service, there will be an open house for family and friends on Sunday, June 4, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the family home. If so desired, donations can be made to the COPD Foundation. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. www.chapellawn.ca 204-885-9715.
