Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGWENDOLYN MURIEL SMITH (nee THOMPSON) November 1917 - May 2017 In her 100th year, with family by her side, Mom passed away at Deer Lodge Centre, Winnipeg, on May 27. Left to mourn are her loving husband of 71 years George, sons, Terry (Heather), Teddy (Mary Ann) and Timmy, grandchildren, Katherine and Tyler (Jen), stepgrandchildren, Deanne and Jamie, great-grandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, brother-in-law Don (Rowena), and sister-in-law Belle (Don deceased). Gwen was predeceased by her parents, Herb and Elizabeth Thompson, brother Bert and his wife Eva. She will be affectionately remembered by her nieces and nephews and their spouses and families; the Thompson's, Schultz's, Hoy's, Smith's, Kenney's, and Barnes. Mom was born in Parry Sound and was raised in McKellar. Some of her youth was spent in several lumber camps where her father was manager. In 1931, they moved to Schumacher where she attended public school. She then went to Timmins High & Vocational School in Timmins. The family later moved to South Porcupine where she met Dad. After a five year overseas military tour, Mom and Dad were married in January, 1946. Over the next 12 years came the three boys, we were her pride and joy. Summer vacations were our special time with camping, songs and games. Mom worked at some of the more famous establishments in South Porcupine: Uly's, Sky's and Clarks Ladies Wear. Mom loved to travel and was also an accomplished pianist. Curling was her sport. She also enjoyed entertaining - ribbon and pin wheel sandwiches were her specialty. Family Christmas was always at our place where everyone enjoyed themselves. They stayed in the Porcupine till 1967 when Dad's work took them to several locations in Ontario. They retired in Sault Ste. Marie; however in 2007 they got the moving bug again and relocated to Winnipeg. In accordance with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a small family service held. Memorials can be made to a charity of your choice. Thanks go out to Kiwanis St. James staff and residents. A special thanks to the fantastic staff at T6 Deer Lodge for their kindness and care.
