REID GARRY SCHINDLE It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Reid Garry Schindle. Cancer took the Gentle Giant peacefully in his sleep on June 16, 2017. Reid was born on August 27, 1949 in Ericksdale where he grew up playing Davy Crockett barefoot with his BB gun. Reid continued his love for the outdoors by working for Federal Fisheries. After seeing a man with a great, big chest and a great, big Mr. Manitoba trophy on the midway, Reid decided he would do the same. In 1977 he won his first Mr. Canada Heavyweight title. He is the only man to date to win five consecutive Mr. Canada titles. Always an entrepreneur, he shared his love for body building by opening the first Gold's Gym in Winnipeg in 1982. Reido/Schindy/Schin was always a gentleman and would give you the shirt off his back. Reid is survived by his daughter Sheena and his siblings, Ashley (Albert), Ruth (Mickey), Clarence (Carol), Joan (Charlie), and Valerie. He has numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews as well as friends' children that were considered family. We would like to thank the many friends who were by his side during his battle. We would also like to thank the palliative care team for their kindness and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Palliative Manitoba or CancerCare Manitoba. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 23, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Finish Line Room at Assiniboia Downs where family and friends can gather to share stories and eat pie. Reid, you’ve been walking through my thoughts and memories of you flood through my heart. There are so many things I wish I had told you when I could. I know we’ll meet again one day and I look forward to seeing your face. I too have cancer now. I hope I can be as brave and strong as you were. Life is unpredictable, never dull moments, but as you always said… “It is what it is.” I’m at peace with it all. Missing you Reid, love Gail - Posted by: Gail Deere (Friend ) on: Oct 19, 2022

It will soon be 4 years since I lost an amazing friend. I wish now that I would have told you then how much I cared about you and how much I wanted to spend quality time with you. But it was not meant to be so I just live in the memories of good times, laughter, silly adventures and your smile. You were such a gentleman. You always put a spark in my heart. I miss you Reid. - Posted by: Gail Deere (Friend) on: Apr 28, 2021

I knew Reid when as a young man I relocated to Winnipeg from Northern Ontario 40 years ago. I trained in the weight room dungeon of the Central YMCA where he cast his first epic impression on myself. He had the distinct habit I recall from day one of always winking his pecs constantly and continuously and each of his pecs were as big as a slab of beef...to which coming from a small town in Northern Ontario I did not think was humanly possible lol. But it was his million dollar smile that filled a room more so than his frame. There was the likes of Bruce McDougal, Jack Dunn, Jon Van Drunen and a young future middleweight Mr Canada Doug Ross in the same gym back then and weight training/body building was still considered as a sub-culture. But Reid's presence alone gave it an air of mainstream respectability and credibility and he stood out from the others, not just on stature but in the low key/quiet and non threatening manner in which he carried himself despite his massive size. I long ago lost touch with those from that era and only learned of Reid's passing last year thru an acquaintance but about a year before Reids passing I did get to sit down with Reid and raise a glass of beer when Ralph Sacco organized an old Vaughan St YMCA member get-together with many attending and tho hoping for the best for him looking back I realize now it was a chance for many to say goodbye. He was well respected in the body building/weight training/fitness culture in Winnipeg by many, including myself. If there ever was a poster of how a Mr. Canada Heavyweight Body Building Champion should look or a template of how one should have carried themselves? It was him but I don't think a poster would have done Reid Schindle justice compared to the long shadow of positive influence and aspiration he cast on many in real life. About 25 years ago I was just starting to lift weights and my Aunt introduced me to Reid. We went over to his house in St James and he gave me some terrific advice about proper nutrition, wrote up a weight lifting routine for me and gave me my first weight lifting belt. I will never forget his kindness that day! - Posted by: Mark Mazur () on: Aug 03, 2017

1972, Vaughan Street YMCA in the basement weight room, a skinny 16 yr old, that's where I first met Reid ... a gentleman and class guy. A rare breed in today's world. - Posted by: Dave Simpson (Friend) on: Jul 09, 2017

Reid and I started working at Fisheries on the same day. I still remember going with Reid to the main office to complete paperwork, and how all the ladies at their typewriters in the steno pool went silent when Reid walked through the door for the first time. He became a good friend but sadly we hadn't met in many years. My condolences to the family, whom I know he cherished. - Posted by: Glenn McGregor (Freind) on: Jun 25, 2017

I remember in the early days when I started working out at the central Y, must have been around '79. I was on the back seated rowing machine and Reid politely asked if he could work in. Geez this is Mr Canada talking to me between sets and he came across as the most unassuming polite guy in the gym. I learned a real lesson in life that day. Thank you. My sincere condolences to his family. - Posted by: Hans Winkler (Friend) on: Jun 23, 2017

Reid was a Dear Friend to my brother Howard Erickson, now deceased. Howard would be so sad to know Reid has passed. So many times I would run into Reid and he was always looking like the handsome Reid that we all know. One would never think he could have any troubles in his life. The memories that would surge from the 1980's of Gold's Gym. OMG. Now memories again through this man on this sad day. He has just connected us all again. I was proud to be a member/employee/competitor of Gold's Gym in those days. Those years were a huge part of my life. I have congratulated Reid for his achievement's over his competitive years and for opening his doors for a real great place to spend a lot of our time at. Cause it was/is what we love to do. Big hugs to Reid's family and special friends. Some of you are my friends. Miss you and those days. Keep being strong! - Posted by: Jill Palmer (McWhinney) (Friend) on: Jun 23, 2017

I knew Reid through the bodybuilding world. Reid was a kind and gentle man, with a smile that could brighten any room. He always had time to chat and say hello, as well as answer any questions in regards to a routine, diet or nutrition. He had an incredible way of making you feel special and that always put you at ease. After many years, I ran into him at a store, where we stopped to talk at length. It was as if the years had not passed. To Sheena and the family, I offer my condolences at this time. Of anything in life, it's to make an impact on another. This is special. And Reid did this, just by being himself♡ Rest in peace beautiful Reid... I know now that that loud thunder coming from the heavens is you 'Pumping Up!' High School friend from Toronto Street. Fondest memory, playing flag football at DMCI, opposite teams, couldn't catch me the 1st time, 2nd time caught me with the ball, straight armed me, with the ball, over his head and gently set me down in our end zone. Always a friend. You will be missed. My Sincere Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Gord Sharpe (Friend) on: Jun 22, 2017

Imagine you are a scrawny 18 year old at the FitStop and Mr. Canada takes time out to totally explain his abdominal workout and coach you through a few sets. Do you think that might make a lasting impression? I've often thought of Reid over the ensuing years. He was a real gentleman and will be missed. - Posted by: John Bracken () on: Jun 21, 2017
