Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARIA DECKER January 4, 1936 - June 20, 2017 With great sadness and heavy hearts, our family grieves the peaceful passing of Maria Decker (nee Scheibel), aged 81 years, formerly of Gypsumville, MB, at the Lakeshore General Hospital on June 20, 2017, with her loving family at her side. Maria was born in Bad Nauheim, Germany on January 4, 1936, the first of five children. The family faced many challenges and hard times due to the war in Germany. At the age of nine, the war was finally over. Maria had many jobs in her young life, such as washing dishes at the age of 12. When Maria was 17, she worked as housemaid for a doctor and his wife. Later she would work cleaning at a Butcher shop. Through a relative of Ervin's mother Maria started writing letters to Ervin. They corresponded for 14 months. A marriage proposal from Ervin found Maria coming to Canada on June 6, 1957. They were married on July 5, 1957. Their happy union resulted in five children, Isabel, Dolores, Evelyn, Raymond and Angela. They lived on the family farm with Ervin and mother Julia. Together, they raised cattle and Ervin worked at the Gypsumville Quarry. Maria was kept busy raising their children. Everyday tasks were hard to do, such as cooking, cleaning, baking, and washing clothes as electricity was not available until 1962. She prided herself in keeping a well-organized house. Ervin and Maria moved to the town of Gypsumville in 1970, where they did not have indoor plumbing until 1984. To supplement the family income Maria took on babysitting jobs and cleaning at the Gypsumvillle hotel. With the extra money she was able to purchase her own entertainment unit for her living room. This made her very proud! They moved into a new home in St. Martin in 1984, only their youngest daughter was still at home. Maria worked as a guard matron for the Gypsumville R.C.M.P. for 21 years. Maria leaves to mourn, her loving husband Ervin; her four children, Dolores, Evelyn (Charles), Raymond, and Angela (John); grandchildren, Ryan, Danny (Krysta), Lisa (Kelvin), Meagan (Andrew), Caitlin, Dylan, Chris, Colton and Leanne, as well as six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Also her siblings in Germany, Hilde, KarlHeinz, and Ursula. Maria was predeceased by her father George in 1982, her mother in 1987, son-in-law Gordie in 2010, daughter Isabel in 2012, and sister Lydia in 2014. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at the Gypsumville Hall with Dawn Tober officiating. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Gypsumville Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Charles Kitchur, Dylan Kitchur, Danny Hillyer, Jim Decker, Jim Kitchur and Dave Dunn. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Eriksdale Personal Care Home for the care and compassion given to Maria. Also thank you to Dr. Roets, nurses and staff at the Ashern Lakeshore Hospital especially the Palliative Care Unit for their dedicated care of Maria. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Lakeshore Hospital in care of Julie Bergner, Box 721, Ashern, MB R0C 0E0. Sorry to hear of Maria's passing, our condolences to your families. I still use her torte shell recipe that she gave when I make a fruit torte. That was in 1980. Our thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Angela and Ken Dawyduk (Old neighbor ) on: Jun 26, 2017
