MARY JANE MCINTYRE (nee SHORTILL) Peacefully, with her family present, Mary Jane passed away June 16, 2017. We celebrate Mary Jane's life and take comfort in knowing that it was full of joy. Mary Jane was predeceased by her loving husband of 43 years, Ken in 1997. Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Nancy (Ron Marion), and Jane (Harold Ramsay), as well as her son Scott (Jill). She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Laura and Aidan Ramsay. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Audrey (Shortill) Baines of Victoria and her daughters, Susan Shortill and Cynthia Johnston and their children. She will also be missed by her many friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Lolita and Robert Shortill and her brother Dr. Walker Shortill along with her in-laws, Margret and Duncan Scott McIntyre. Mary Jane, known as "MJ" to her friends, was born in Brandon on June 4, 1929. MJ attended Wolseley, Laura Secord and Gordon Bell Schools. She graduated from United College and went on to be in one of the first graduating classes of Social Work at the University of Manitoba in 1950. Mary Jane dedicated her career advocating for others working at Logan Neighborhood House, the United Way of Winnipeg, and ending her career at Lions Housing. MJ was also very active as a volunteer. She was chairperson and then a board member of Deer Lodge Centre and later as a director of the Deer Lodge Foundation. She also volunteered at Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba and for the Winnipeg Public Library Board. One of her favourite memories was participating as a volunteer during the 1999 Pan Am Games. It was not all work and no play for MJ. She had many friends. Of note was a group of friends known as "Club". Most of this group had known each other as early as elementary school. They met monthly for dinners and shared experiences along with lots of laughter right up until this past November. Ken and "Jane", as he called her, loved to travel. They took their children on an epic month long trip through Great Britain in 1970 which firmly established Ken as her tour guide. Together they later returned to several countries in Europe and travelled to Russia, China, and South East Asia. Later with her friend Elaine Taylor, the two travelled to Egypt. Margret McIntyre purchased the cottage at Whytewold in 1936. MJ experienced the cabin for the first time in 1947. As fate would have it, the cottage became a center piece of her life. She absolutely loved the cottage and cherished every memory made there. She gave herself unconditionally to her family. The family in turn has countless memories of a kind, loving, strong, caring and supportive wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and aunt. The family would like to thank the staff at the Shaftesbury Park Residence where she enjoyed several years of being able to live independently. And we are so grateful to all the staff at Tuxedo Villa who cared for and supported Mom over the past three months. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place later this summer.
