VELMA DOREEN BOYER
Date of Passing: Jul 02, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVELMA DOREEN (VAL) BOYER Velma Doreen Boyer (nee Poynting) passed on Sunday, July 2, 2017, aged 83 years. She joins her husband of 50 years, Peter, father George, mother Myrtle, sister Ellen Meyer, brother and sister-in-law Tom and Lillian Poynting, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Stan and Ann Boyar, uncle and auntie Bill and Muriel Clifton, and her Granny Clarkson. She is survived by her children Gordon (Marianne) and Christopher (Martina), grandchildren Sabrina and Kirsten, sister Linda Miller (Don), brother-in-law Egon Meyer, and many nieces and nephews. She had a special relationship with niece Vivian Meyer, who has been like a daughter to Mom, and visited her frequently at Concordia Place Personal Care Home. The love Vivian shared with Mom will always be cherished by her family. Velma was born in Winnipegosis, where she spent her early childhood, and where she is remembered fondly by her many family members, especially cousins Myrtle and Shelbie. Upon the death of her mother Myrtle, the family moved to Bannerman Avenue in Winnipeg, with father George and stepmom Maisie. After her marriage to Peter in 1954, the family settled on Newman Avenue in Transcona. Val, as she was known to her relatives, friends and co-workers, spent her working life at the Health Sciences Centre for over 30 years, as a switchboard operator at the Children's Hospital, and then on the paging system. She was proud of being part of the team that implemented the first PBX system in Manitoba. Mom was a great cook. Her holiday meals were legendary. All of us were so full at the end of the evening that we couldn't eat another bite, but Mom always made a tray of bunwiches that somehow disappeared too. She also loved gardening and her yard was full of vibrant colour all summer long. Later in life, she adopted two cats, Precious and Miss Kitty, who gave her much joy. Val was a long-time member of Transcona Memorial United Church and an associate member of the Transcona Legion. Memorial service will held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Winnipeg Humane Society would be greatly appreciated. Glen Eden Funeral Home & Cemetery 204-338-7111

Although I am close friends with Vivian and not a relative she was always aunti Val to me. I enjoyed many holidays with the family and I was very fond of her. She had such a good sense of humour and playing board games with her was so much fun. She really had a caring way about her... I will really miss her. - Posted by: Tricia Graf (Friend of the family) on: Jul 10, 2017

I was able to get to know Val and her family, through my good friend Vivian Meyer. She was so nice, tons of fun and had a great laugh. I remember going on the Christmas light bus tour for several years in a row with Vivian, her mother Ellen and Val. I brought along my mother's famous Christmas fruit cake and Val graciously brought amazing sandwiches for us to snack upon. I remember her fondly from her 80th birthday celebration 3 years ago. My sincere condolences go out to her family. Hugs to you all. - Posted by: Rob Everitt (Friend of the Family) on: Jul 10, 2017

Gordon & Chris: So sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. I always enjoyed the delicious smells coming from your Mom's kitchen every weekend as she prepared meals for your Dad for the week since she worked evenings. The best neighbors I have had.
