Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLAURA ANGELA HENKEL (nee WERNER) February 10, 1923 - July 5, 2017 After a short illness, Laura Henkel passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 5, 2017, at the Arborg & District Health Centre. Laura was born in Morris, MB and spent nearly all of her life in the Ashern area. At the age of 12 her mother passed away, and shortly afterward her dad moved the family to a farm on Silver Bay Road, where she bravely began her role as nurturing oldest sister. A few short years later, as a young lady, Laura set off to find work in Winnipeg. She returned home and married Harry in 1944. Together with Harry's parents, they moved to the US for five short months. The couple then returned home to farm for a year before buying and settling into their new home in Ashern. When Randy arrived in 1959, Laura and Harry took pride in their new role as loving parents. Laura always worked outside the home as well. She was a cook at the Ashern Hotel and Lakeshore General Hospital, and she and Harry were caretakers at the Centennial Hall for many years. She was an active member of the Order of the Royal Purple and Grace Lutheran Church. Laura volunteered her time as a 4-H leader, enjoyed playing cards, sewing, cross-stitch, reading crocheting, and crafts. Laura had an appreciation for travelling, and took trips overseas to the old country and across Europe. She also enjoyed many bus trips exploring North America. In recent years, she loved it when her nephews, Ken or Randy picked her and Evelyn up to go cruising, visiting, and exploring the Interlake. After retirement, Laura lived in Winnipeg for short amounts of time in order to be closer to her city sisters. Then she moved back to Ashern, where she and her sister Evelyn spent time caring for each other as neighbours in the Pioneer Manor. Her final few months were spent in the care of Arborg Personal Care Home. Laura's memory will be held and honoured by her sisters who were very dear to her, Ella Bilodeau, Ruth (Bill) Blonskie, Alice Harris, Evelyn Budge and Violet Hodgson, also her numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Adolph and Mathilda, her brother George, husband Harry, son Randy, niece Judy, and brothers-in-law, Raymond Bilodeau, John Harris, Norman Budge and John Hodgson. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Ashern, with Rev. Mark Koenker officiating. Interment to follow in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lakeshore Hospital Guild, in care of Julie Bergner, Box 721, Ashern, MB R0C 0E0.
