Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELEN MARKS Peacefully, surrounded by her family, on July 20, 2017, Helen Marks, aged 86 years, passed away at the Palliative Care Unit of the Gimli Community Health Centre. Helen was born on May 10, 1931 in Gimli. Until the age of 16, she lived three and a quarter miles out of town when the family moved into the town of Gimli. When she finished high school, she helped run the K & K Store with her grandfather and father. Art and Helen married on April 26, 1952. They moved to Red Lake, Ontario for one year before returning to Gimli where they began their family. She was a telephone operator at the Air Force Base until it's closure, and later worked at Gimli Transfer until her retirement. Helen loved to cook and bake, her freezer was always packed with pails of every kind of cookie for when any company dropped by. She had a gift for making people laugh. Many evenings were spent listening and dancing to old time music. Lots of time was spent playing cards with friends and family. All her life, she was a bingo player. In her later years, many hours were spent playing Fast Track with her Waterfront Crew. Until last week Helen completed the Jumble from the daily Free Press which she proudly won a couple times. She leaves to mourn, her daughters, Shirley Drolet (Jean-Claude) and Linda Kehler (Albert); grandchildren Marc-Andre Drolet, Melanie Bergthorson (Jeff), Julia Buller (Jacob) and Kate Baird (Scott); her great-grandsons, Rand and Loic Bergthorson; Xavier Baird and Arthur Buller; in-laws Mary, Betty, Adolf and Martha, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Adam and Mary Kasupski; sister Rose, and son-in-law Dennis. The family would like to thank Dr. R. C. Patel for his care throughout her life, and a special thank you to the nurses and support staff of the hospital who treated her like family. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Gimli, MB, on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Mike Nwosu officiating. Though I did not know Helen for very long I feel privileged to have been a part of caring for her in her home... I will remember her warmth and openness. She lived the challenges of her faltering health with great dignity and delightful humor... I will cherish her memory. My thoughts and prayers go out to her loved ones. - Posted by: Susanne (Homecare nurse) on: Jul 30, 2017

Extending heartfelt sympathy to the Marks family on dear Helen's passing. Helen began as a volunteer canvasser with the Canadian Cancer Society's April door to door campaign in 2004 and still canvassed in 2016! Not only did she canvass Waterfront, but was always available to help find additional volunteers for the annual community canvass. Thank you for sharing this beautiful tribute! Cherish the memories! Al & I met Helen, my cousin Albert's wife's (Linda) Mother about 20 years ago . We always had great times together both in Gimli & even once in Pettawawa. Helen & Al shared May 10 as a birthday, perhaps that explained their connection! Lots of great meals, card games & fast track sessions together. Last August we had such a great evening with her family at a Country & Western dinner theatre in Winnipeg. Wonderful memories...she will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Gale Conrad & Al Hasselfeldt () on: Jul 24, 2017

As a youngster our family would take the trip from Red Lake to Gimili for vacation time with family. I loved visiting Auntie Helen as she was always so nice, warm hearted, and loving. Aunt Helen always had a hug for us, and a heart warming smile. She could make the sunshine when she laughed. I have so many fond memories of my youth with all the Marks family, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. May God take Auntie Helen and make her top Guardian Angel of all. She will be missed by her family and anyone who had the pleasure to meet her. Rest in Peace Auntie Helen, give my Dad a poke in the arm from me. Love you. - Posted by: Wendy Marks Monkman ( niece) on: Jul 23, 2017

Our condolences and prayers are with you in this time of your grief. Helen will be missed by all of us. She was a great person to know and was an honour to be part of the family. This friendship started when I was a teen and eventually married into the family. Helen was like a sister to me. Will always be remembered. God Bless. - Posted by: angie pashnicki, wendy and brad (family) on: Jul 23, 2017
