CATHERINE NIZIO
Born: Oct 22, 1958
Date of Passing: Aug 03, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCATHERINE NIZIO (nee SLIVINSKI) October 22, 1958 - August 3, 2017 After suffering with Myelodysplastic Syndrome for almost three years, and surviving a lung haemorrhage and battling Leukemia over the past several months, a very tired angel took her last breath and passed from us into the arms of her Lord at the age of 58. She put us at ease by being completely at peace with her fate. Cathy was predeceased by her mother Florence and her nephew Cory, but is survived by her grieving father Frank Slivinski. Her memory will be deeply cherished by her husband Ed, daughters, Kate and Lexis, and cat Lix. Marguerite (Don), Teresa, Patricia (Neil), Ken (Liz), Mark (Angie), and Jacqueline (James) are extremely saddened by the loss of their sister. Cathy also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends who will miss her dearly. Born in Winnipeg and growing up in the North End, she attended Margaret Scott, Isaac Newton and Sisler High schools, graduating with a Bachelor of Education at the U of M. Although she chose her husband many years earlier, Ed finally proposed and they married in 1982. They soon built a house in Birds Hill where they raised their family and celebrated their 35th anniversary last month. Cathy was known for her helpful nature. She was a teacher for over 30 years at Tyndall Park School, where she grew as an early-years educator, helping and passing on knowledge to children and co-workers alike. She was active in all her daughters' activities including volunteering at the local skating club, and coordinated catechism classes at her church for many years. She excelled in any craft she attempted and taught herself to sew, becoming an exceptional seamstress and quilter. Her skating dresses and quilts were big hits at craft shows. She always found time to do clothing alterations for friends and family. Cathy's retirement at age 55 meant more time for these hobbies, and sharing her talents at church and with the Catholic Women's League. She even started to work part-time at Fabricland, which her family joked was her real "dream job." The greatest joys in her life were spending time with her family on camping trips, cottage visits, and summers at Gull Lake. She always looked forward to Friday pizza nights, sisters' weekends and times sharing a bottle of wine with her daughters. Throughout her life she taught them how to care for a home, speak up for themselves, and live a giving life with strength and decency. "(We'll) love you forever, (We'll) like you for always, As long as (we're) living, (our) Mommy you'll be." - R. Munsch Our gratitude goes to Dr. O. Mooney and the ICU team at St. Boniface Hospital for giving Cathy a few more months with us, and to Dr. C. Speziali and the GD6 team at Health Sciences Centre for doing everything they could in trying to make it longer, and dignified near the end. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 11, 2017 at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, 3597 Main St. with Fr. Henryk Laciak presiding and Msgr. Stan Jaworski cocelebrating. The service will end with interment of the ashes followed by a reception and eulogy at Glen Eden Cemetery, 4477 Main St. Those who wish are welcomed to join the family in a Rosary at 9:30 a.m. in church prior to Mass. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a cancer or any other charity of your choice would be preferred. Cathy required a great many life sustaining transfusions during the course of her illness. If able, please consider donating blood. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenedenmemorial.ca Glen Eden Funeral Home & Cemetery 204-338-7111

Dear Ed, Lexi, Kate and Slivinski family, How sad I was to hear of Cathy's passing. Please accept my prayers and condolences during this difficult time. I was thinking the other day of the wonderful memories I have spending time with Cathy. She taught me to play the guitar, and we had such a great time singing together in the 12 noon choir at St John's. I had to chuckle reading the part of how she chose you Ed to be her husband long before perhaps you even knew. I remember all those times she talked about you and I kept thinking I hope he knows. When I came to Sisler, she was there to guide me that first year and help me with my transition to the "big" school. Although we lost touch as sometimes we all do, please know that I am better for having her friendship. May happy memories sustain you through your grief. Rest easy dear friend, you suffer no more. - Posted by: Kathy Ewatski-Foret (Childhood friend ) on: Aug 16, 2017

Ed, Kate and Lexis, I was so sorry to hear of your terrible loss. I worked with your mom for 10 years and she had admirable energy and spirit. She talked about her girls all the time- she was so proud. She was a very giving woman, and quite a fun character! - Posted by: Karen Walpole (Colleague) on: Aug 15, 2017

Dear Ed, Kate and Lexi and family. My condolences on the passing of your dearest loved one ....Cathy, a former colleague and friend. I met Cathy from the first day she started at Tyndall Park School. We worked together at the same early grades for many years. I remember everything about her that you all wrote in her obituary. Cathy was multi talented and a pro at multi tasking. She was also quite the party planner, especially retirement parties. What she did for my own retirement was a marvellous feat and a cherished gift. I am truly saddened by her suffering these past months and the extreme pain of losing her so early in life. Thinking of you all at this difficult time.
