Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBERTHA WINNIFRED NORBERG Bertha Norberg passed away peacefully on August 12, 2017, at Carman Memorial Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband Vic, parents Milton and Eva Nichol, brothers Ken, George, and Earl Nichol. She is survived by her children Gerry Norberg (Mari-Jane), Debbie Nordquist (Larry) grandchildren Eric Nordquist, Aaron Nordquist and Evan Nordquist (Julia). She is also survived by her brother Clifford Nichol, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was born Bertha Winnifred Nichol, at Warren, Manitoba, on September 7, 1926. Mom talked about the difficulties of growing up in the 30s, but also fondly remembered the good times of family gatherings, school and church picnics, and sporting events. She met Vic in 1946 and were married in 1948 and moved to the Norberg farm at the Swedish village near Meadows Manitoba. In 1959, Mom attended teacher's college in Winnipeg, and afterwards began her teaching career at the one room elementary school at East Rosser. Some how she was able to teach school, raise a family, and help Dad on the farm. After the East Rosser School closed, Mom taught grades one to four at the Meadows one room school. In 1963, the family moved to Roseisle, when Dad became the Paterson Elevator agent. A year later, Mom began teaching grade 3, 4, and 5 in Roseisle. After going to night school and summer school, Mom obtained her bachelor of Education degree, at the age of 56. Later her teaching career would lead her to becoming a resource teacher in Carman. Mom and Dad enjoyed traveling. They enjoyed a few trips to Europe, as well as Western and Northern Canada, and parts of the U.S. One of Mom's favourite trips was in 1998, when she and her brother Clifford visited Ireland and traced their Irish roots to Carrick Fergus. Mom loved gardening, nature and her church. She was a voracious reader and could read several books every week. She did the New York Times crossword puzzle daily, until just recently when her eyesight became too poor. Most of all she loved her family unconditionally, and was always supportive and encouraging. The family wishes to thank her many friends and neigbours who were so kind and helpful to Mom. Whether it was bringing her soup, sharing their garden, running errands for her, or just stopping in for a quick visit, we are forever grateful for your loving gift of friendship and support. Funeral services for Bertha Norberg will be held Saturday, August 26 at 2:00 p.m., in the Carman United Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carman United Church in her memory. Our sincere condolences go out to Gerry and Debbie and all their families on the passing of Mrs. Norberg. I first met Mrs. Norberg in the 1970s, when Gerry and I went out to Roseisle, on one of our many adventures. Mr. and Mrs. Norberg always warmly welcomed me into their home. She was a classy lady, with many varied interests, and a vast knowledge of the family history, which she always enjoyed sharing. Sadly, we are not able to attend her Service, but our thoughts and memories are with the family.
