ALVIN A. COX January 21, 1932 - August 29, 2017 Alvin Allison Cox died on August 29, 2017, from complications of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. His death ends a life of kindness, selflessness, and loyalty to those who knew him as a husband, father, sibling, a colleague or a friend. Born near Minitonas, Manitoba, in 1932, Alvin studied in local schools, played baseball, and worked with his family on a farm acquired through his father's military service during the First World War. While working in the prospecting camps and mines at Lynn Lake, Manitoba, he met Beverley Alderson of Swan River, Manitoba. Their meeting was the unintended consequence of the romantic interests of lifelong friends. Where that relationship proved fleeting, Alvin and Beverley soon became a couple. They frequently were joined at family events by Clancy, Alvin's devoted Labrador-Newfoundland mix, who relished the remains of drive-in popcorn and soon accepted responsibility for his master's girlfriend. Alvin and Beverley married on September 3, 1962, in Swan River, Manitoba. They frequently joked their marriage was a succession of one-year contracts, eligible for an extension at the mutual consent of both parties. The coming week would have marked their 55 wedding anniversary. After training as an aircraft mechanic at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta, Alvin and Beverley moved to Winnipeg where they worked in aerospace and government, respectively. Alvin soon joined Standard Aero Limited, a precursor of today's Standard Aero Corporation, of Scottsdale, Arizona. He worked for Standard Aero for the remainder of his career and enjoyed frequent contact with former colleagues throughout his retirement. Alvin took great pleasure in keeping the home which he and Beverley built and shared throughout almost the entirety of their married life. In retirement, Alvin took great pride in the continued maintenance of their home and accepted Beverley's supervision and direction in their gardens. Their grandchildren - Alix, Kole and Kaden - were objects of Alvin's interest, love, and delight to the end of his life. With the onset of his dementia, Beverley became Alvin's support and lovingly cared for him in their home until only the last weeks of his life. Their love, devotion, and stubborn insistence on their independence were evident to all, including the extraordinary staff of PRIME at Deer Lodge Centre, who supported Alvin and Beverley through these difficult last years and months. Alvin was predeceased by his parents, Archie and Caroline Cox, and his sister Anita and brother Gordon. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Sharon Cox, of Winnipeg, Manitoba. In addition to his wife, Beverley, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Wendel Cox and Anna Dronzek, of Hanover, New Hampshire, USA, and son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Lisa Cox, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and three grandchildren. Service to be held Thursday, September 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, Beverley and her family suggest donations to PRIME at Deer Lodge Centre, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3, Canada.
