WALTER BURDZ It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Walter Burdz, on Thursday, August 31, 2017, at the Lion's Manor Personal Care Centre in Winnipeg, at the age of 83 years. Left to cherish Walter's memory are his loving wife of 58 years, Josephine; daughter Kim Martens (Willy); son Walter (Susanne); granddaughter Ashley Kreml (Greg); granddaughter Melissa Woodworth (Mike), and great-granddaughter Tenley Woodworth. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Sonia Burdz; his brothers Victor (Nina), Paul (Irene) and Peter (Diane); sisters-in-law Elsie Ostiuk, Phyllis Maloney and Jane Roskivich; brother-in-law Joe Roskivich (Rose); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Aleksandra; brothers John and Boris; father-in-law and mother-in-law Michael and Ann Roskivich; and brothers-in-law Walter Roskivich, Peter Roskivich and Mike Maloney. Walter was born on June 15, 1934 in Bula, Belarus, and spent most of his childhood growing up in Germany during the Second World War. The family then immigrated to Canada in 1950, and he settled in Manitoba. His first job was working on a sugar beet farm near Portage la Prairie as a teenager, then he worked as a short-order cook at Southport, before eventually moving into Winnipeg where he spent the majority of his adult life employed as a shipper-receiver at Canada Packers. As a true people-person, Walter could talk to anyone about anything at any time, and was known for always being a real gentleman with a big heart. If you met him, you loved him - and vice versa. Upon retirement, the thing Walter enjoyed the most was taking every opportunity to spend quality time with his family (the greatest love of his life), as well as going for daily walks to meet friends for coffee at Polo Park. Throughout his life, he was a very avid sports fan (with his favourite teams being the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Winnipeg Jets, Winnipeg Goldeyes, Toronto Blue Jays, and Dallas Cowboys), as well as being a life-long coin and stamp collector. He also loved to play weekly lotteries, and always enjoyed the monthly "Burdz Brothers" card games. Unfortunately, at the age of 78, Walter had a stroke which slowed him down but he was able to overcome many obstacles through his determination and unwavering desire to always be there for his family. The family would like to thank all of Walter's caregivers over the last few years of his life, as he went through the various stages of his post-stroke recovery, both at home and during intermittent stays at rehab facilities (Riverview, Deer Lodge, and Grace Hospital). Special thanks as well for the wonderful care provided to him during his final few months at the Lion's Manor. Walter's funeral service will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main Street at Manitoba Avenue. For those who wish, viewing will be held prior to his service. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.
