(RANDY) DAVID RANDALL CRAIG BEYNON
Date of Passing: Sep 02, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or Memory(RANDY) DAVID RANDALL CRAIG BEYNON With great sadness we announce that on Saturday, September 2, 2017, Randy passed away at the Health Sciences Centre, with his family at his side. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Irene Beynon, and his brother-in-law Paul Gwynne. Randy will be deeply missed by his wife, Cathy; daughter Valerie; and son Dale; along with his sister, Donna Beynon-Patterson (Gary); nieces, Hannah and Roslyn; brother-in-law Michael Gwynne; sister-in-law Marcy Gwynne; nephews, Alex and Max, as well as many uncles, aunts and cousins. Randy was born August 14, 1951. He enjoyed his "idyllic" childhood in Winnipeg's West End, just down the street from Clifton Community Club and within walking distance of the old Winnipeg Arena and Stadium. Having access to these venues solidified his lifelong devotion to sports, especially hockey, baseball and football. Randy was 17 years old when his father died suddenly and life changed. Randy became motivated to become a schoolteacher. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Winnipeg and his Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba and joined the St. James-Assiniboia School Division in 1974. He taught and coached sports at Lakewood and Strathmillan Elementary schools. He enjoyed these years very much but his career was curtailed in 1990 by severe vision loss and gradually by other health issues. Meanwhile, Randy had married Cathy in 1989 and soon had two children of his own to test his theories in childrearing and teaching. Looking back, it was a blessing that Randy was able to dedicate so much time to Valerie and Dale. He attended all their school and sporting events with great enthusiasm. Over the years, we adhered to the theory that "winter's for school, summer's for fun" and we accomplished his goal to visit all of the provinces, many of the states, Mexico, and even managed a European tour. With his own physical and medical struggles, Randy was sensitive to the struggles of others and was a regular donor to the Christmas Cheer Board, Winnipeg Harvest and many other charitable causes. Randy was always appreciative of the care he received over these many years from his doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers, and support staff that allowed him to adapt and enjoy his life. As a family we extend a heartfelt thank-you to all of Randy's friends and everyone in the medical field who supported him over the years. Randy strongly believed in the power of education. Therefore, if desired, donations may be made to the Anatomical Research Fund at the University of Manitoba. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, Winnipeg, followed by a reception (wheelchair accessible). I was feeling nostalgic, so decided to Google old teachers who I remember fondly. Randy was one of my favorites. I was his student in probably 1984. I was extremely surprised to learn that he experienced vision loss in his later life. I am totally blind, and attended Lakewood school for my elementary years. I remember his incredible sense of humor and how he related to me and all the other students. RIP Mr. Beynon. - Posted by: Jason Fayre (former student) on: Mar 15, 2022

Randy was friends with my brother Barry when they were growing up on Ashburn street. We lived at 1149 Ashburn till 1970, the Ward family. To find in grade 4 for him to become my Teacher. I loved him as my math teacher which made me very interested in Numbers. Which led me to my working career of doing administrative work. I was thinking of him today and googled his name to find that he had passed 3 years ago. I'm so very sorry for your loss, for a big man he was such a sweet person. - Posted by: Charlene Purcell (Student) on: Mar 17, 2021

I had a dream I was at a class reunion and Mr. Beynon was there. So I decided to look him up only to find he had passed. I remember you fondly, sir. Your kind spirit and large stature. That resounding voice so commanding but so reassuring. You never knew this but you were one of my favorite teachers. Even now I can picture myself sitting in my desk, open area, absorbing all your words of influence and impression. Thank you for imparting wisdom and applying life lessons I carry with me to this day. My heart goes out to your family and friends as they try and navigate this life without you. - Posted by: Melanie Mitchell (nee Sparks) (Former student (Lakewood)) on: Jul 08, 2020

Sending heartfelt sympathy to the Beynon Family. I had the good fortune to meet Randy as a child when visiting my grandparents who resided next door to his family on Ashburn. Our paths crossed again years later as colleagues at Lakewood School. As the French teacher it was my job to take over each class while the homeroom teacher enjoyed prep time. Randy’s unique sense of humour aka classroom management was appreciated by both his students and me as he settled them down for Madame Monk’s class. Rest in peace Randy. “What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others remains immortal.” Robert Pine - Posted by: Maureen Irvine (Monk) (Colleague ) on: Sep 30, 2017

My sincerest sympathy to Randy's family. I am saddened by this news of a good man. I think of Randy and I smile. We had such fun teaching Grade 5 in the open area at Lakewood School! I remember his gentle manner, his kindness, and his interest in others. I especially loved the way he always addressed me as "The Colonel"! Such laughs we shared! - Posted by: Lorraine Prokopchuk (Former colleague Lakewood School) on: Sep 15, 2017

I was the Speech Therapist at Lakewood School. Randy was always one of those teachers who was so welcoming to someone like me that was itinerant and not part of the staff. He was known as the 'gentle giant' of Lakewood School! In later years when I ran into him and went to say hi, he would always say... Monica it has to be you, I would know your voice anywhere!! Rest In Peace my friend, your vision was a loss to you...but more of a loss to the many students who never had the advantage of having you as a teacher. - Posted by: Monica Gustafson (Fellow Educator in St James ) on: Sep 15, 2017

I taught with Randy at Lakewood School and saw him in later years at a variety of school-related functions. He was such a lovely guy, always so happy and upbeat, even after his vision loss. It was an honour to have known him. Randy was so proud of his family. My sincerest condolences to Cathy, Valerie, and Dale on the loss of your wonderful husband and dad. I was lucky to grow up just down the block from Randy on Ashburn St. He would often come down the street to talk football with my Dad. As we grew older we would often walk to and from school together. He was a remarkable young man, so interested in every facet of life, but especially sports! I last spoke with him a few years back on the phone. I was aware of his health issues, but his passing is a huge shock! My condolences to his family and dear friends. He will be greatly missed I'm sure. - Posted by: Susan Sawka (Young) (childhood friend) on: Sep 11, 2017
