FRASER GILBERT ORR After a brief illness, at the age of 98, our beloved father passed away on Friday, September 15, 2017 at the Carman Memorial Hospital, his devoted daughter Janice by his side. He was predeceased by his wife Alma, his parents, his five brothers and one sister. Left to cherish his memory are his children Terry (Jerelyn), Ken (Olivia), Norman (Cathy), Janice (Ken) and Larry (Laura), as well as 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Dad was born in Elm Creek, Manitoba on May 15, 1919. He met his future wife Alma in grade school and when he joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp in 1941 she flew to Toronto where they were immediately married. At the end of the war a family was started and in 1946 they moved back home. 1947 marked the opening of Orr Brothers Hardware, a joint venture with his brother Garnet. A few years later Dad took over his father's insurance business, later to be appointed agent for MCIC in the municipality of Grey. Dad was not only a family man but also valued his community, spending many years serving on boards for the fire department, town council, and town hall. He was also a life member of the Legion. Dad retired in 1984 and for the next 14 years he and Mom wintered in Mesa, Arizona where they enjoyed golfing and crafting. In 2005 when Mom's health declined he made the Heritage Manor home, devoting himself to her care until her passing in 2013. As Dad got older he took pleasure in keeping up with the news, watching the Bombers and golf on television and doing jig saw puzzles. When he quit driving you could see him running errands around town in his sporty red scooter. Being the longest resident of the town he became the unofficial historian and was frequently called upon to verify facts with his unbelievable memory for names, places, and incidents. On July 1, 2017, in conjunction with Canada Day, Dad was honoured for his service to his community by having Ash Avenue, the street on which he was born and resided for most of his life, renamed Orr Avenue. We will remember Dad as a true gentleman and someone who could be relied upon to provide thoughtful counsel as well as help, who never lost sight of what mattered in life and who kept us chuckling with his wonderful sense of humour. Special thanks to the caring staff at the Carman Memorial Hospital for making Dad's passing as comfortable and dignified as possible. As per Dad's wishes cremation has taken place. There will be a celebration of his life on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Elm Creek Community Hall followed by a reception and a time of fellowship. A private family interment will take place at the Elm Creek Cemetery. If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Heritage Manor Building Fund payable to the Elm Creek Housing Corporation, Box 34, Elm Creek, Manitoba R0G 0N0.
