MARTHA MARY MCGURRAN (nee SMITH) Following a long and hard fought battle against cancer it is with sadness that we announce the passing of Martha Mary McGurran (nee Smith) on September 20, 2017 at 74 years old, at the St. Boniface Hospital. Known affectionately by her family as wee May, she will be lovingly remembered by her husband Edward McGurran; her children Tracey Levasseur (Rene), Shawn McGurran (Adrienne) and Kerry Duguay (Mark); her grandchildren Danielle, Colleen and Nicole Levasseur, Taylor, Connor, Liam and Kelly McGurran and Justin, Ryan and Jordan Duguay; her brother John Smith (Sue), and her sisters Majella McEleney (Charlie) and Bernadette Campbell (Gerry). She was predeceased by her grandparents John and Mary Ann Doherty; her parents James and Elizabeth Smith; her sisters Margo Smith and Lily McBride. May was born on August 6, 1943 in Derry, Ireland. She courageously immigrated to New York at 22 years old where she would meet the love of her life. Edward was a Canadian who chose to join the Marines and serve a tour in Vietnam. Reporting to his new duty station in Virginia, Edward turned down the option to finish his tour in Hawaii. It was there that he would meet wee May who was brought to Virginia by her innate family devotion to help her cousin to care for her first child. Fate used a guiding hand to bring together a beautiful couple in the most unique fashion. The vibrancy of their family tree all stems from the strength of the foundation Edward and May McGurran laid down for them. The service will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at Saint Emile Parish, 556 St. Anne's Road, Winnipeg, MB. Donations may be made to either the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter or CancerCare Manitoba Foundation in May's memory.
