HUGH TAYLOR MD, FRCPC Dr. Hugh Taylor passed away peacefully on September 30, 2017 at St Boniface Hospital, with his family by his side. Hugh was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth, in 2013; and leaves his son, Hugh Ross Taylor (Susan), and grandchildren Victoria, Hugh Christopher and Gordon Taylor of Winnipeg; daughter, Claire Osborne (Nat) of Athens, Georgia, and grandchildren Lauren and Ryan Kinsey of Carmel, Indiana. Also left to cherish his memory are Hugh's brother, James Taylor of Moose Jaw, SK, and his niece, Carolyne Taylor of Victoria, BC. Hugh was born on May 3, 1931 in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan. After growing up during the Great Depression in a small prairie town, Hugh pursued his studies at the University of Saskatchewan. Subsequently, he entered Medical School at the University of Manitoba, graduating in the double class of 1957. Specialty training in Pediatrics followed at the Winnipeg Children's Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, England, and Cornell University in New York City. Hugh returned to Winnipeg in 1964, and joined the Department of Pediatrics at the Manitoba Clinic. Famous for his jellybean jar and bushy eyebrows, Hugh had the privilege of caring for countless infants and children over his 40 year career. In addition to his clinical practice, Hugh was active in teaching at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine, and served as President of the Winnipeg Children's Hospital and President of the Canadian Pediatric Society. Hugh had many and varied interests outside of Medicine. In particular, he had a life long passion for sailing and woodworking. He started sailing as a child at Regina Beach in Saskatchewan, and then spent many years sailing dinghies at the Falcon Yacht Club. He eventually moved on to sailing a small keelboat on Lake of the Woods, where he and Hugh Ross enjoyed many years of cruising and racing in the LOWISA. Woodworking brought him great joy through the winter months. He enjoyed making virtually anything out of wood. Once the grandchildren came along, he was always making them small toys and boats, even a rocking horse and a sleigh. In later years, Hugh combined these two passions and built many exquisite radio-controlled model sailboats and motorboats. Hugh was a dedicated father and especially dedicated husband to his wife, Elizabeth. He met Elizabeth while training at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. She joined him on his return to Canada, and they were married in 1961. They led a fairly quiet life, enjoying their dogs, flowers and teatime every afternoon. Hugh was steadfast in his care and support of Elizabeth as her physical health deteriorated over the years. After her passing in 2013, he missed her terribly, even as his own health was compromised. Hugh was extremely fortunate to be able to remain in his own home at the Canoe Club until two weeks before his passing. Very special thanks are extended to Chona, Violetta, Cherry, Maria, Clarissa and Reva - without whom that would simply not have been possible. Please join us for a celebration of Hugh's life to be held at the home of Hugh Ross and Susan on Friday, October 13, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of other tributes, memorials may be made in his memory to the Children's Hospital Foundation or a charity of one's choice. • Iam saddened to hear of Dr. Taylor's passing. He was my pediatrician as well as my children's. They still have fond memories of him and his jellybean jar. A few years ago I ran into him at Vic's Fruit Market, He was still alert as ever and remembered each one of my children and asked how they were doing. That is one of many endearing qualities that we will truly miss! He was such a wonderful, sincere individual. Condolences to the Taylor family. - Posted by: Connie Leong (former patient ) on: Oct 13, 2017

  • My condolences to Hugh Ross, Claire and families I was sorry to hear of Hugh's passing. I haven't seen Hugh since Orma's burial in Assiniboia but have many memories of him throughout the years. I can still remember the day he introduced us to Elizabeth at Aunt Annie's cottage at Regina Beach. He and Elizabeth were both so happy and Aunt Annie was even happier to see him and to meet Elizabeth. He and I emailed after my Mom's passing in 2007 but then we lost touch. Fortunately Dorell has always shared news of your family with me. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you say your final farewells. It is always hard to say good-bye to the people you love. • I would like to convey my heartfelt condolences to the family on the loss of Dr. Hugh Taylor. I first came into contact with him over forty years ago when he became my children`s paediatrician. He was a remarkable, caring, patient, and kind doctor. I met him in recent years on Grandparents Day at S.J.R., when he remembered the names of both my children and wanted to know all about them. - Posted by: Gillian Norgate () on: Oct 10, 2017

  • Doctor Taylor was my doctor as a young girl, over 25 years ago! I still remember the brows and the jelly bean jar 😉 I also remember how he was able to make the first shots I remember quick and painless by making me count backwards as fast as I could. During my count down he stick me with the needle and I didn’t even notice. No one could ask for a better doctor. Much love to his family as they celebrate the wonderful life he led ❤️ - Posted by: Sara (Patient) on: Oct 09, 2017

  • On behalf of myself and my children, we would like to send our heartfelt sympathies. Thank you for taking tender loving care to my children. You eased their fears when it came to the many needles. The jellybean’s were the highlight of their visit. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your reassuring and kind gentle words. You will be dearly missed. - Posted by: Linda Janzen () on: Oct 09, 2017

  • I got to know Hugh, as I was assigned to assist Elizabeth for her daily needs before they moved to the Canoe Club. A quiet, unassuming man, gentile in spirit.
