ARTHUR FREDERICK CANNELL 1920 - 2017 Peacefully, after a recent decline in health, our Dad passed away on Monday, October 9, 2017 at the age of 96. Dad was born December 4, 1920 and lived on Strathcona Street until he got married. Dad attended Isaac Brock and Daniel McIntyre schools. His parents came to Canada in 1908 from Liverpool England. Dad worked for a short time at the CPR, and then joined the Air Force and became an A1 Instrument Mechanic. He served in England with the #8 Bombardment Group. Soon after, when Dad came back to Canada, he married the love of his life, Kathleen (Elsie) (Dodd). Since Mum's passing in 2010, Dad has missed her everyday. They were always together and never apart. Where went one, the other was close behind. Dad and Mum travelled throughout Canada and to different parts of the U.S.A, first by car and then by tour bus. Left to mourn his passing are his children, Terry (Bruce) Wilson, Randall (Diana) Nelson, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Gordon (Cindy) Cannell, Karen Cannell Jamieson (Bruce) Jamieson, Lori (Ronald) Hutlet, of Beausejour, MB and Leslie (Blake) Appelt. Dad had 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews in Winnipeg and BC. Also predeceased by his parents, Richard and Isabel (Day); his brothers, Douglas and Ronald; as well as his sister Dorothy Roberts. Dad and Mum lost their son, Dwight and their grandson Stephen Cannell. Dad was a quiet, kind and gentle man, always ready to have a discussion about politics. Dad was a parent volunteer for #191 and #220 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadrons in the 1970s. Dad was president of the sponsoring body for #220 RCAC when 500 Wing sponsored the squadron. His unwavering support was paramount, as he was always willing to take us to any cadet activity throughout the years. Dad retired from Canada Post in 1981. In 1987, Dad and Mum found retirement in the mountains surrounding Westbank, BC, however loving the mountains, but missing family, they returned to Winnipeg in 1998. They still continued to travel together. Even after mum's passing, Dad was very proud that he could still live independently. After being moved to Kiwanis Courts this past February, he could still travel and do most anything on his own. In accordance with Dad's wishes, there will be no service, but a private family interment will take place at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff at 3 South at Grace Hospital and 2 East at Deer Lodge Centre for all the care and compassion shown to our Dad these last few weeks. Dad had a special relationship with each one of his kids and grandkids and great- grandkids. Dad and Mum loved music very much and there was never a time that they weren't dancing around the kitchen or living room on Mandeville Street. We love you very much and will miss you always, may your dancing in heaven never end. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fire Fighters Burn Fund 303-83 Garry St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4J9. • Hello Art, I must apologize for my tardy condolence. I must admit I have been at a loss for words, something very unusual for me. I was really saddened to hear of your passing. I know that life is finite, and I know that you were having some health issues, but I somehow was hoping you’d be the first to last forever. We all experience loss but it’s never easy. I’m happy that I’ve been able to re-connect with you over these last few years. The last time we spoke I could tell that you were slowing down; to be honest so am I. But your mind was so active, so full. You remembered clearly all the events we talked of. You remembered the Air Cadet parades, the pipe bands, and the times at Grand Beach with my parents. We shared all kinds of air force memories, in Canada and England. Most of all you remembered me. I couldn’t have been more thankful and pleased. There were also more memories. You also were the first to remind me of the first time we met. It was May of 1975. I didn’t expect that. To refresh, I had been invited on a date by one of your daughters. I had only met her once, and I couldn’t completely remember her, but I accepted her invitation over the telephone. I realized on the way over to pick her up that I wasn’t sure who she was, and I suddenly felt terrified. I was going to meet this girl and I was also to meet her parents for the first time. Oh my god! But you made me feel welcome. You and Elsie made me feel like I was one of the family. You welcomed me with open arms. My thoughts and memories are so genuine. Over time I really felt that I was one with you, but that was the way you were. You made those around you feel so special. Over the years our families grew together. It was Air Cadets and the pipes that bonded us. But I never forgot your kindness to me. I only wish it could have been more often and stronger. I wear an Air Force Tartan tie each Friday, in support of our troops. I will wear your RAFA (Royal Air Force Association) pin that you gave me back in 1975 as well. I presented you with a Vulcan Bomber after my Exchange Visit to England in 1975, and you gave me the tie pin. This is something I have cherished over the years. I’m sorry for my loss, and your passing. I will be joining you soon. Love, Brian - Posted by: Brian Howie (Friend) on: Dec 22, 2017
