VICTOR REMPEL June 20, 1936 - October 16, 2017 Peacefully, embraced by the loving hands of family, Victor Rempel was taken from us, in the early morning hours, to rest after a long and difficult battle with Parkinson's disease. Victor was predeceased by his father John Rempel and his mother Susanna Rempel. Left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife Huguette; children Lynne (Larry), John (Megan), and Mary Anne (David); adoring grandchildren Marcus, Genevieve, Emma and Katie; sister Helen (John), nephew and niece Scott (Jennifer) and Karla (Vance) and great-nieces and nephew Hannah, Oliver and Sophia. Victor was born in Halbstadt, Ukraine in 1936. During this time of war in Europe, Victor's father was separated from his family as he was interned in a prisoner of war camp in Russia. Miraculously and mercifully, Victor's father was found by the Red Cross and reunited with his family in Germany. They all immigrated to Canada in 1949 where they settled in Winnipeg with the loving help of the Mennonite community of North Kildonan. Victor graduated from Miles MacDonnell Collegiate and went on to graduate from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Education degree. Victor was deeply interested in learning, as well as the liberty and responsibilities of freedom, and spent much of his life pursuing and gaining knowledge through books, media, travel, and culture. Victor was a high school teacher for most of his adult life, with a brief stint as a transit bus driver in the city of Chicago, while studying there. When Victor and Huguette (also a high school teacher and widowed) married, Victor took on Huguette's three children as his own, and the next chapter of his life began. Victor was a devoted father and spent many happy moments with his children. Together, Victor and Huguette travelled all over Canada, the United States and Europe. They enjoyed exploring cultural activities, beautiful music, theatre, cinema, gardening, and great food together. When grandchildren came into their lives, Victor was so happy to receive and spend quality time with his four amazing bundles of pure joy. Victor enjoyed living life well and with purpose. He was a generous, reflective man who considered every life special. Victor and Huguette developed many wonderful, lasting friendships throughout their journey together, for which Victor was especially thankful. Most of all, he adored Huguette and his whole family, who were everything to him. Victor would drop everything to do anything for the people he loved, and he loved us all extremely well! Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who helped Victor through his last years of life, keeping him safe and comfortable, including friends, family, and the amazing staff at Misericordia Place Personal Care Home. You are all awesome and are forever in our hearts. While flowers are always greatly appreciated, donations in Victor's name can be made to the Mennonite Central Committee. "Good night, sweet prince." A memorial service celebrating Victor's life will be held at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com
