DONALD WALKER
Born: Aug 29, 1924
Date of Passing: Oct 17, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD WALKER On Tuesday, October 17, 2017, surrounded by his loving family, Dad passed away peacefully at the Deer Lodge Centre. He faced his later years with great strength, tenacity, and a determination to march to the beat of his own drum. We lost a gentle, caring man who was devoted to his family. The heavenly choir gained an enthusiastic tenor who just loves to sing. Blessed with the love of two wonderful women in his life, Don was predeceased by his first wife Ethel in 1980, and his second wife Jean in 2016. He also lost his granddaughter Kala in 2007, and his sister Margaret in 2011. He is survived by daughter Lesley (Dave); grandchildren Heather (Jonathan), Kevin (Julie); great-grandchildren Levi, Solomon, Maycie, Kate, daughter Karen (Brent); grandchildren Brad, Derek (Jenna), Shelley (Josh); great-granddaughter Julia; and son Garth (Tammy), granddaughter Kristin. Don will also be missed by his second family, Karen Sauder (Michel), Patricia Sauder (Bryen), Scott Sauder (Cathy), John Sauder (Kim) and their children. Don was born August 29, 1924 and raised in Fort Rouge attending Lord Roberts School and Kelvin High School. He saw active duty during the Second World War as a bombardier with the RCAF over Burma. After the war he returned to Fort Rouge where he married Ethel. Together they raised their family in St. James supporting many activities such as baton, baseball, and hockey at Deer Lodge Community Club. Don worked many years for Canada Post, retiring in 1984. This gave him the time to pursue several of his passions including Barbershop Quartet singing. He was a longtime member of the Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen, as well as tenor for several quartets including the Happy Homesteaders, and the Merry Morticians. He also enjoyed golf, curling, swimming, jogging and poetry. In the late 90's Don met Jean. With a common love of music, as well as curling, golf and travel, they married in 1999. They were thrilled to share two loving families, and cherished all occasions that brought both together in musical celebrations. In 2006, Don suffered a cerebral aneurysm that left him partially handicapped. As a result he became a resident of Deer Lodge Centre. Always enthusiastic, and appreciative of all that was done for him, Don was a favorite of many of the staff, and made the very best of his time there. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of T4 and T3 for their care and compassion. Dad was always treated with kindness and respect, and for that we are all truly grateful. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive, Winnipeg at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation would be greatly appreciated. www.deerlodgecentrefoundation.com For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit www.chapellawn.ca Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 204-885-9715

I am sorry to hear of Don's passing. Don and Jean came to Calgary to spend time with relatives and I visited with them both at that time. Don was a warm and inviting soul and we had fun conversations while they were here. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Dianna S (friend) on: Nov 04, 2017

Hi Don, One of your buddies here, Don Churches. We grew up together as kids, played ball together, biked together. There were the Daniel brothers Harry and Duncan, Lloyd Rodway, Dave Donaldson and many others. I too, when country called, joined the Air force and became a navigator after having flown solo on a couple of trips over home turf. After the war, I entered civy street, married my girlfriend and have a family. I live in Calgary now, having been transferred by the company I worked with. Found Lloyd Rodway already settled here. With relatives in Winnipeg, I frequently visited you in hospital where my cribbage talent was revealed. To this day, I'm not really sure whether or not you remembered me but nevertheless I played. Hopefully, you are teaching others where you are how to play cribbage. Rest in peace, Don. Who knows, we may meet again someday. Don - Posted by: Donald Churches (Friend) on: Nov 02, 2017

Don's parents were friends of my parents and Don was a hero of mine as a kid during the war. I still have a picture of Don and his flying Buddies in Burma that was published in the Free Press during the war. RIP Don and my sincerest condolences to your family. George A.
