JAMES ARTHUR SCHMIDT November 7, 1932 - October 29, 2017 Unexpectedly, with family by his side, James (Jim), passed away at the age of 84 years at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre. His memory will be cherished by his daughter Birgit (Steve) Yuriy and family, Christopher, Jennifer (Keegan) and Paul; son Kent (Theresa) Schmidt and sons, Travis, Taran and Tanner; daughter Heather (Robbie) Anderson and daughters, Courtney (Kyle) Savary and Kelsee; and daughter Monika Schmidt and daughters, McKenzie and Lexi. Jim is also survived by his brother Walter; sister-in-law Elsie and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Arthur (1969) and Antonie (1970); wife Margret of 54 years (2016); brother Irvin (2014); sister-in-law Cecile (2012); granddaughter Ashley (1996) and long-time school friend Bruce Harris. He was born, raised and educated in Grandview, Manitoba. After graduation, Jim worked as a farm hand at Bob Wilson's farm in Grandview. He was later employed with Eldorado Mines in Port Radium, NWT, as a power engineer. Jim then returned home to help support the family and farm due to his father's failing health. Jim retired from farming after 41 years and relocated to Selkirk to work with Margret at Margret's Cafeteria. Retirement plans to travel changed after Margret was diagnosed with dementia and succumbed to the illness nine years later. Jim devoted his time to her care and well-being. Jim's most significant accomplishment in life was finding a beautiful, caring and forgiving wife and the four children with which they were blessed, was further reward. The family would like to thank the homecare staff, Debbie, Wendy, Linda and others too numerous to mention, Dr. Shaker, Dr. Strang and Dr. Rae at Selkirk Hospital, and the many caring staff on the surgical ward at Selkirk Hospital . A celebration of life will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Selkirk, Manitoba with Pastor Erik Parker officiating Condolences may be left at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
