Born: Feb 11, 1937
Date of Passing: Nov 06, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryARNOLD BOBBY (BOB) RAMRATTAN February 11, 1937 - November 6, 2017 With his loving family by his side, Bob's journey on this earth came to an end on November 6, 2017. Bob was a loving husband to Dianne and proud father to Ric (Sue - Alysha and Skot, Angela and Adam) and Alisa (Christine - Michael and Matthew). He was an adoring brother to Merle (Peter), Mona (Ashley), Ray (Sandra), Rudy (Sally), Christine (Ben), Gobin (Hema), Santi, Doolin and Dhano; and proud uncle to his 13 nieces and nephews. Bob had so many wonderful friends in his lifetime, in Canada and in Trinidad. Bob was born in Jordan Hill, Trinidad and came to Canada in 1960. On that first day he met his "wife to be" at the Java Shop. Not wasting any time, he asked her on a date to a cricket match at the City Park the next day, and the rest was history. Bob and Dianne raised their family in Winnipeg, MB and Kamloops, BC. Bob's career spanned over 40 years working for the Province of Manitoba's Department of Education and Northern Affairs, Red River College and Caribou College. What mattered most to Bob was his family, friends and the promotion of quality education and a meaningful job. He dedicated his own life to learning and educating others, first with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Winnipeg, followed by a Masters of Education from The University of Saskatchewan. He was a pioneer of adult education in Manitoba, bringing "made to fit" training programs to many rural and First Nations communities. His most prized accomplishment was the FRED project (Fund for Rural Economic Development) in the 1960s and 70s, where he had the chance to initiate and develop adult education training programs for the benefit of Manitoba's Interlake region. In his final hours, Bob said "I had a good life and I will always be with you, in your hearts forever." A Memorial Service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Bob Ramrattan Memorial Award for Community Service Students at Red River College, C306-2055 Notre Dame Ave., R3H 0J9, Winnipeg, Manitoba. I first met Bob at United College in the early 1960s. However it was during his time at Red River College that I worked with him. I was a Rural Development Counsellor with Department of Agriculture in the Interlake and had many opportunities to facilitate and promote adult learning courses including BTSD (basic training for skills development) carpentry, accounting and office training. The goal of F.R E.D. was to provide educational and employment skills both for First Nations people and farm folk where their small mixed farm holdings were no longer adequate to support a family. Bob was an enthusiastic supporter and facilitator of such training in his role at Red River. Late one week he phoned me with a dilemna. He had a level 3 BTSD course starting the next Monday in Lundar and his instructor had quit. He asked for help finding a replacement. I referred a young Metis fellow, Steven, who was working with our carpentry training program. Not only did Steven accept Bob's job offer but he served his whole career as an instructor at Red River. He is also the father of Lisa, a medical doctor and the wife of Wab Kinew, Manitoba's NDP leader. Society needs more innovative and committed public servants like Bob.
