FRANCES MAY KERR October 24, 1919 November 11, 2017 Peacefully on the afternoon of November 11, 2017, Frances May Kerr passed away. She was predeceased by her husband William, parents Alfred and Elsie Lockwood, and brother Arthur. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons Bruce and Brian (Patti), and granddaughters Shauna (Matt) Baluk and Jennifer (Russell) Penny. Mom was born, raised and educated in Winnipeg. She graduated from Robertson College and went to work. Her most memorable employers were with the CPR, Lake Louise and during the war in Ottawa. Shortly after the war ended she met William Kerr, recently discharged from the Royal Canadian Navy, through the efforts of our godfather Arthur Miller. They hit it off and the rest as they say is their and our history. Our grandfather and Mom's father was instrumental in helping to set up Dad and Mom in their own Grocery and Meat market store. Dad attended to the store and Mom kept the accounts organized by pen and paper - no computers and apps then. Mom also kept the household, made delicious meals every day, and raised both Bruce and Brian. We were not such a full time 'chore', as they were able to go 10 pin bowling weekly during the winter, attend New Year's parties, helping the Optimist Easter Basket function, and party from time to time with shared friends. During the summer Mom and Nancy Wade looked after six over sugared kids from infants to teenagers at the cottage at Gimli and the menfolk would arrive regularly at the weekends for some R&R not so much. Also, during the winter Mom was part of a group of ladies that held weekly bridge games two tables that rotated house to house weekly for their friendly games which as kids we were not allowed to interfere with. Mom had however caught the bridge game bug and her natural competitive spirit lead her to duplicate contract bridge that she attend for more than 25 years. She earned the rank of Gold Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League by her performance at regional, national and international tournaments. She was a fabulous and much loved lady the best Mom three guys could ever hope to have. The family would like to thank the Grace Hospital 3 North staff and doctors for their care and compassion, the paramedics for their care and attention and also the homecare team for their help over the past year. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on November 21, 2017 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Interment to follow. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I fondly remember "Auntie" Fran and our days at the Gimli cottage--every July. What a great month we had. No running water and endless days on the beach! I remember Auntie Fran and Mom playing cribbage while we grabbed comic books and read--waiting for the hour to pass after eating our lunch. Such good times with Bruce and Brian. Thinking of you guys. Auntie Fran was a lovely, kind person--with a softness that I remember well. - Posted by: Laurel Plimley (Wade) (friend) on: Nov 20, 2017

  • I was so sorry to hear of your Mom"s passing. I will always remember the Bridge Club ladies having fun at our house when it was my mom's turn and the trips to the states that sounded like so much fun! Your Mom was a very warm and friendly lady, and I know Mom and Dada always had lots of fun with your parents. I was happy to hear she played as much bridge as she could possibly fit in in her later years, and enjoyed a long and healthy life. My thoughts and best wishes are with you all .... - Posted by: Pat Dent (Friend) on: Nov 20, 2017
