SHEILA CLARA ANN GUNDERSON (nee SPRATT) November 13, 1936 November 17, 2017 With sad hearts and fond memories, we say goodbye to our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Sheila will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Bruce (Carmen), Ardis (Bryan), Treva (Marc); and special niece Shauna (Mark); her grandchildren, Josh (Allyse), Caiti, Benny, Maeve, Nate, Noah, Kyra, Brynn and Tayah; brother Bob; sister-in-law Esther and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Mom was born November 13, 1936 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to James and Ethel Spratt. She grew up in the West End of Winnipeg. Her mother passed away when she was 16, which greatly affected the rest of her life. After graduating from Gordon Bell High School, she attended Manitoba Commercial College. Following that, she worked for Eaton's mail order and at MTS. In 1958 she met the love of her life, Derrall Gunderson, and after a whirlwind romance, they were married on October 31, 1959. Halloween became a source of amusement as time went on! Bruce came along in 1962, followed by Ardis in 1965, and Treva in 1973. Except for a couple of years as church receptionist, she never really worked outside the house after the children were born. That did not stop her from being very busy! She was always devoted to her family, but whatever group she belonged to gained her full attention and expertise. She was especially involved in the Anglican Church in Winnipeg, serving on various Altar Guilds, selling Pakistan Embroidery and singing in church choirs. She was also very proud of being an Associate Sister of St. John the Divine. She was especially fond of Anglican Island and worked in various capacities over an almost 20-year period. The cottage at Spruce Lake held a special place in her heart. She loved to go there and spend time with her family. The last few years had been especially hard since Dad's passing. She still managed to be busy with her various groups, but evenings were hard as she and Dad used to watch TV and just be together. After a brief struggle with cancer, Mom passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre on the 3rd floor Palliative Care Unit, with her family at her side. Mom received excellent care from the staff at CancerCare Manitoba's Clinic 2, and in the Palliative Care unit at Riverview Health Centre. A special thank you to Dr. Chris Proctor, the nurses and the aides at Riverview for the care and compassion during her time there. Their visits were always welcome, and their knowledge, expertise, and kindness were unmatched. Although we are heartbroken with the loss of our Mom, we are finding comfort in knowing that she and Dad have been reunited! A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 24, 2017 at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 3830 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 1160-75 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or the Canadian Association for Williams Syndrome, P.O. Box 2115, Vancouver, BC V6B 3T5. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE ((204) 949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I have known Sheila for over 40 years and consider her a friend and mentor. We worked together with many others in the "old days" at St Stephen and St Bede's on a 1000 projects, committees, fund-raisers, meetings, funerals, meat pie making extravaganzas, Christmas Bazaars, special events, Women's Commission functions, weekly worship services and the list goes on. We had long and lovely conversations in all of these contexts. I could always go to her with questions when I was leading a group, because she had lead just about every group that the church had to offer. And she had good advice. Her husband Derrall was an equally a strong worker and supporter and our little parish could not have functioned nearly so well without their amazing contributions and leadership. She had much to teach , those of us who worked at her side, just by her own strong example of dedication, hard work and her loving support of others. I consider it a privilege to have know Sheila and Derrall. My condolences to all generations of her family, but especially to Bruce, Ardis and Treva. - Posted by: Cathie Lee (friend) on: Nov 21, 2017
