PAULINE DOWHANIK (nee SHUMAY) August 14, 1926 November 20, 2017 Pauline Dowhanik (nee Shumay) was born August 14, 1926 to Yuri (George) Shumay and Anna Senkiw, immigrants from Ukraine, in the Whitesand District, northeast of Springside, SK. The youngest of eight children, she attended Homestead School, and moved to Yorkton, SK, where she worked as a nurse's aide and later moved to Winnipeg where she worked her way up to head cashier at Safeway. She married her best friend, John Edward Dowhanik, in 1957. They had five children. She was a devoted and loving mother during their family years in Kindersley, SK, Redditt, ON, Dauphin, MB, then retiring to Winnipeg. She was a great cook, making the best homemade bread, perogies, peroshke, holopchi and borscht, but couldn't resist KFC. She loved camping, getting a sun tan at Grand Beach and enjoyed her morning cup of coffee on her deck. Mom was a master card player, especially at King Pedro and Cribbage, happily skunking any of her kids or grandkids who would challenge her to a game. Her wonderful sense of humour often came out at the most unexpected of times. She was a devout Catholic, truly the matriarch of our family. She always had a profound message in family prayers at Christmas, sharing her unconditional love of the Lord with her children: son Stephen (Allison), daughter LeeAnn, daughter Shelley (Andrew), son Robert (Brenda), son Paul (Monica), 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her seven siblings and her husband. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Vital Parish, 1629 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg, on Friday, November 24, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermott Avenue, are gratefully appreciated.
