IRMA GOSGNACH (née FRANZ) May 5, 1931 - November 26, 2017 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Irma Gosgnach on November 26, 2017, at the age of 86. Irma was predeceased by her mother and father, Antonietta and Celso Franz, her infant daughter, Maria, her sister and brother-in-law, Rina and Camillo Cavalieri, beloved husband, Ermenegildo Gosgnach, and former son-in-law, Vance La Claire. Left to cherish her memory are her loving daughter, Rina La Claire, son-in-law, Bill Bodner, grandchildren, Lia Wright and Brent, and Lia's husband and children, James, Jessica and Hugh. Irma was born in Montemaggiore, Udine, Italy, where she met and married her husband, Gildo. In 1952 they welcomed their daughter, Rina. Irma and Rina joined Gildo in Canada in 1957 where they immediately began building a successful life for themselves. Irma was employed by the Women's Pavillion at the Health Sciences Centre for 37 years, where she developed many long-lasting and cherished friendships. Irma and her family began attending Holy Rosary Church upon arrival in Canada, and for 60 years it was a community in which she felt happy and welcome. Irma, a woman lovingly referred to as "Nonna" by many who knew her was a woman who only ever rested for two reasons: to sleep and to watch The Young and the Restless. The remainder of her life was devoted to her family in a million different ways. Her mouthwatering cooking often made from food directly from her garden will not only be remembered by her family, but also by her daughter's and granddaughter's friends. She baked delicious Italian pastries for hours on end, then generously gave them away for all to enjoy. Ensuring that everyone was well fed left Nonna with a tremendous feeling of satisfaction, and it was gift to be able to enjoy a meal with her. Cooking wasn't her only skill, Nonna was also a very talented knitter and seamstress. She clothed her grandchildren in every kind of beautiful homemade apparel that you can imagine, and she would surprise even the most hip of fashionistas with some of the avant-garde pieces she was willing to sew for her granddaughter. Throughout the years, Nonna was lucky enough to enjoy lots of travel. She loved visiting family in Italy and always looked forward to her trips to Hawaii. Nonna was beyond overjoyed to welcome her great-granddaughter in 2011. She and Jessica shared a special bond, and it's fair to say that both Jessica, and then Hugh when he came along in 2015, could always put a smile on her face. Nonna loved her family so much, and she passed that legacy down to her loving daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Nonna will be dearly missed and her family feels incredibly lucky to have had her in their lives. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 1 at Holy Rosary Parish Church at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Sam Argenziano as the Celebrant. Viewing and condolences will begin one hour prior to Mass. A reception will follow Mass in the Parish Hall. Entombment will take place in the Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum at Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley Street.
