NICKOLAUS MANTLER 1940 - 2017 Nick was born in Russia. His grandparents and parents lived in Holland, and when Russia opened its doors and invited families to move there to farm, they went. They grew several acres of roses. The Czar and his family used to stay there once a year, (the house was huge and was like some sort of tea house or bed and breakfast of that time). The Royal family presented them with portraits of themselves. Before the revolution in 1917, the Czar warned the family to burn the pictures, as the Czar's enemies would kill them and burn the buildings. They remained in Russia until 1945, when the family moved to Austria. Nick's sister was born there in 1946. They moved to Germany in 1947. From there they came to Canada in 1948, to Gretna, Manitoba. They lived there for ten years and the children received their education. They then moved to Winnipeg, where Nick and his Father both worked at U niversity of Manitoba. After two years, Nick moved careers to CP rail in 1965 and later Via Rail, where he worked as a Porter, until his retirement in 1995. Nick was very much appreciated and acknowledged for his attention and service to the many travellers. Nick took care (nursed) his parents until their death. He was a very devoted son. Nick was predeceased by his parents and his sister Helen. He leaves to mourn his passing, his friends, Patricia Johnson and family and Garry Kesterke. Thank you to the staff for the care he received at Parkview place. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to: www.thomsoninthepark.com
