PEARL MARIE SMITH (nee CLAPP) June 16, 1920 - December 4, 2017 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Pearl Smith on Monday, December 4, 2017, at Maples Personal Care Home. She passed away peacefully in her sleep. Pearl was predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, Edward "Smitty"; her parents Stanley and Dessie Donaldson; her sister Mae (Clapp) Holsted; brothers-in-law Rueben and Erwin Smith, Lloyd Easler and Al Holsted; and sisters-in-law Betty Smith and Anne (Smith) Easler. Pearl will be sadly missed by her son Ernest "Jack" of Morinville, Alberta; daughters Faith (Don) Putasnick and Donna (Bryan) Orobko; as well as her eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Pearl was born and raised in Manola, AB, later moving to Redcliff, AB to work in the Dominion Glass Factory where she met and later married husband Ed. After moving and living in Vancouver, BC for a short time, they moved to Winnipeg in 1943 with their family and where she has lived ever since. She worked at the Health Sciences Centre for 18 years, during which time she worked through the 1966 snow storm for several days without going home, but she was mostly a stay-at-home mom, who was always there when we needed her. In her free time she enjoyed playing crib with our dad, playing bingo and knitting socks and hats and mitts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as donating much of her knitting to area schools for needy children. Following in her husband's footsteps, she became an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan which she watched faithfully on T.V. She had also become a big follower of the Winnipeg Jets and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Maples Personal Care Home, especially those on 1 West, where she was a resident for just over a year. As requested, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB. Interment will be held at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pearl's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenedenmemorial.ca Glen Eden Funeral Home & Cemetery 204-338-7111

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Grandma Smith always had a smile, a big hug and a kiss for me when I was growing up and was visiting my cousins (Smith's) during the summer time and holidays. Her and Grandpa (Ed) always brought me laughter and joy whenever I saw them. I always remember a crib board being around and playing with them. That is how I learned how to play, that and watching Grandpa play chess with us and my Aunt and Uncle. Even though she lived in Winnipeg, I always got a Birthday or Christmas present from her or a card with warm wishes. My favorite gift(s) were the mittens or slippers she made for me. They were made with love. I will always love you Grandma....God bless you for being in my life. It was a pleasure to be around you. Love always, Anton. - Posted by: Anton William Polczer (Grandson) on: Dec 12, 2017

  • Pearl was one of my ladies/clients I worked for while in home care about 10 years ago, I would go to her place a couple of times a week for a supper call. She was one of my favourite ladies to go to - she had such a gentle voice, and was so sweet!! I still remember her voice and her laugh!! 😊 I remember one time I went for a supper call - she would always have tea first! I remember her wanting the last half of her burger and fries from when her daughter took her out for lunch from either that same day or the day before! Pearl had the warmest, most friendly eyes! - such a sweet soul! I'll miss her! condolences to the family. - Posted by: anonymous (Former Home Care Worker ) on: Dec 10, 2017
