THOMAS JOHN STANLEY Dad passed away peacefully at the age of 97, to join our mom Hilda, the love of his life, who passed away just four short weeks ago. Dad will also be reunited with his parents, Thomas and Margaret; along with his brother Hugh. Dad will be lovingly remembered by his children, Tom (Linda), Sharon (Daryl) and Gary (Sandy). He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Stephanie (Bruce), Tanya (Donovan), Erin (Svante), Abby (Clint), Keith (Christine) and Jeff as well as his great-grandchildren, Thomas, Douglas, Kyanna, Ryland, Raiyna, Ossian, Rio, Eija, Tyler and Julia and several nieces and nephews. Dad and mom grew up on the same street in St. Vital and went to school together. Dad served five years in the Second World War with the Lord Strathcona Horse. Upon his return home, dad and mom picked up where they left off, and they married in 1947. They celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary in February. As a young boy, dad was a caddy at Niakwa golf course and that is where he developed his love of the game. He spent 45 years as a member of Wildewood and was well known for his willingness to play in all weather conditions and always walked the course. Dad had a soft spot for dogs and each of their dogs enjoyed daily walks in St. Vital Park. Dad worked hard, loved his family and enjoyed his friends. Dad was a longtime member of St. Mark's Anglican Church and the Order of Eastern Star. A special thank you to the staff at Poseidon Centre, in particular the fourth floor staff, for their kindness and attention to dad during his time there. As per dad's wishes, we will have a private family service. If desired, you may donate to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba in his name. The whole Nicholl family (dad Tom) offers our condolences on the passing of both Hilda and Tommy. There were a lot of memories made on Dunraven Ave over the past 68 Years. They had a very long and prosperous life together. May they Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Nicholl family (Long time neighbours) on: Jan 06, 2018

On behalf of everyone at Wildewood, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the Stanley family. Like some others who wrote tributes here, I had the opportunity to golf with Sharon and her father (with Sharon more often than with Tom). Tom had my utmost respect for his unflagging gentle, respectful nature (and patience!) and his dedication to walking the course. His shots were always just “down the middle” of the fairway...no trees for him! I am saddened to hear of the passing of both of Sharon’s parents so close to one another, but there is a certain comfort in that I suppose. They won’t have a lot of time apart. Sharon, my thoughts are with you and your family. I hope to see you this coming summer. We can have a round in Tom's honour. - Posted by: Kathy Bentley (Wildewood Golf) (Friend) on: Dec 24, 2017

Condolences to the whole family for the loss of Tom, a true gentlemen. Like many others I was fortunate to spend lots of time at the Wildewood golf course with Tom. One can only hope to be held in such high regard and to be able to golf like him well into one's 90s. - Posted by: Eric Lister (Friend) on: Dec 13, 2017

I am sorry to read about the passing of your dad and very recently, your mom. Wildwood won't be the same! Glad that you and your sibs had many happy years with your parents. You will miss them so much but the memories will be cherished forever. - Posted by: Peggy (Andrews) Schwartz (friend of Sharon) on: Dec 12, 2017

Tom was one of my favourite people ever, and was so much fun! I of course met him at Wildewood and spent many rounds of golf with him and his friends. One day he and another friend began talking about the Lord Strathcona Horse, and I asked him why he was mentioning them. He told me that he and his friend served with them in World War II. I told him that my father had too. He said he didn't know him but would ask around. The following Saturday he called me over to his car as he was getting ready to head out golfing. He said that the man who was in charge of the Lord Strathcona Horse had become a very respected person because he had written a book about all things that happened during the War with them. He produced the book and showed me that at the back of it every soldier who served during the War was listed with incoming rank, and outgoing rank if they had survived. He then pointed to a page and said "look, there's your Dad" in the list. He then gave me the text to read and I was grateful for that. He also said "I asked around about your Dad and several guys knew him. They said that he was a good guy but did not suffer fools gladly". I laughed out loud because that was a very good description of my father, who had already passed away. I can honestly say that I don't know anyone who knew Tom who didn't like him. I am so sorry for your loss of Hilda and Tom. Wonderful people which I am sure you know ever so well. - Posted by: John Harrison (Friend) on: Dec 10, 2017

As new members of The Wildewood Club in 1972, we were so fortunate to be paired with Tom and Hilda in the mixed curling "fun" league, for despite a 20+ year difference in age (and not winning many games) they made our initial participation in Club activities such a warm and welcoming experience. A true gentleman on the links, Tom will always beremembered for his shunning of the power cart as he walked the course well into his 90's. Our condolences to his family. - Posted by: Earl and Pat Ray (Friends) on: Dec 10, 2017
