DOROTHY LOTHER Following a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease, we lost our mom, grandma, great-grandma, mother-in-law, cousin and friend on December 14, 2017. Fiercely independent, this final chapter was not an easy one for Dorothy, but she tackled it with grace and dignity. Dorothy was a musician, pianist, conductor, teacher, leader and lifetime member of the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers' Association. There was very little she couldn't handle at the piano, playing everything from musical theatre at Rainbow Stage and The Hollow Mug, to German lieder and opera arias for singers competing at the local and national level. She flew in small planes to entertain mining communities and even provided the dinner music for the Prince of Wales at Government House. She was a dedicated school teacher who took her River Heights Junior High School choir to perform at the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988. She was the choir director at St. Jean Brebeuf church where she formed lifelong friendships. She was a private piano teacher with a deep love of classical piano repertoire and heart-felt commitment to her students. Mostly Dorothy cherished her family. She could be strict at times, but she instilled in them values (and thank you card techniques) and even in these last days, she enjoyed some laughter and a good joke. Left to mourn her passing are son Curt (Marie-France Giasson) and daughter Carla (Richard Stotts); grandchildren, Sylvain, Daniel (Nicole), and Nicholas (Brooklyn); and her two great-grandchildren, (who always brightened her day) Isla and Kai. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Herb and Margaret Greene; and husband Herb Lother. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at River Park Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please help us with the Dorothy Lother Scholarship fund through the Winnipeg Foundation and the MRMTA. It aims to honor a young and far too often over looked piano accompanist/ collaborator. This is the gift Dorothy would most love to share. Donations can be mailed to The Dorothy Lother Scholarship Fund, Winnipeg Foundation, 1350 - One Lombard Place, Winnipeg, R3B 0X3 or made online at www.wpgfdn.org/give. My feelings of sorrow go out to Nick, Isla, Kai and Brooklyn on the passing of the wife of the late former performing arts educator Mr. Lother who has a room at Grant Park High School that bears his name because of his commitment to his profession and dedication to extra-curricular activities. - Posted by: Philip (Former colleague of Sara and Kaela) on: Jan 06, 2022

I was deeply saddened by the news of Dorothy’s passing. My parents, Slim and Agnes Belcher, became close friends with Dorothy’s parents, Herb and Margaret, during the 1940’s (Langside Street) and kept in touch for many years thereafter. As a child I spent many happy hours visiting the Greenes with my Mum and Dad. I was also one of Dorothy’s innumerable piano students. She was always generous with encouragement but also had firm expectations. Dorothy was a lovely lady--intelligent, humerous, talented, caring and resilient. Her passion for music was contagious and I attribute my own love of music largely to her. Unfortunately, we lost touch over the years but I often thought of her. I regret that I am out of the country and unable to attend the funeral. My deepest condolences to Dorothy’s family. She was a grand lady and will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Carol Guicheret (nee Belcher) (Family friend and former student) on: Dec 18, 2017

I was so sorry to hear the passing of Mrs Lother as I called her. I have many memories of being with Carla at their house. I always saw her as a beautiful woman with such a shining spirit. Her musical talent and dedication could not be measured. My thoughts are with all the family. - Posted by: Jean-Anne Booker (Carla's school friend at from age 5 to now) on: Dec 18, 2017

Mrs. Lowther had a huge impact on my musical theatre love. She was my music teacher and choir director from grade 7-9. She directed three musicals that I acted and sang in. She was always very kind to me and always had my best interest at heart. I was saddened to hear of her death. And I just wanted to offer you my condolences. She did change my life in the sense that I developed a deeper Love of music and singing because of her. All the very best to you and your family this holiday season. - Posted by: Cathy Harder (Former student) on: Dec 17, 2017
