STEINI (STEINGRIMUR) JONASSON
Born: Sep 26, 1928
Date of Passing: Dec 17, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTEINI (STEINGRIMUR) JONASSON Steini, a kind and gentle man, left us with dignity, grace and in peace in the twilight of a sun-filled day December 17, 2017. Tadi and Evan, our grandchildren, were with me when his spirit moved on to meet with our three sons who were waiting for him. Steini was a wonderful, loving father to our sons, Gregory, Mark and Brent who predeceased him. His was a caring, compassion and devoted love as we cared for them during their brief lifetime as they struggled with muscular dystrophy. Their memories will live on with their sisters, Marina and Kendra and me. Marina (Dennis) Wishnevetski and Kendra, our daughters and son-in-law; grandchildren, Evan (Tadi) and Kaitlin (Oz) were able to share quality time with Steini and myself in the few days preceding his death. A blessing indeed. Steini and I (Elva nee Olafson) were married August 11, 1951 and shared our lives for over 66 years, years that were filled with love, happy times also sad periods but that only strengthened our bond and our family. Steini was a man of many talents, covering a wide range but as he put it, when asked what he had done for his living he would reply "everything". He was known by many for the traditional Icelandic designed jewellery and custom made viraverki (filigree). However he was most proud of his family. Steini was a wonderful, loving father to three sons, Gregory, Mark and Brent, and two daughters, Marina and Kendra. We were very proud that Evan and Tadi asked permission to be married on our 65th wedding anniversary and that Steini and I were able to travel to Airdrie to be part of their special day. Our Icelandic relatives, Solveig Ebba Olafsdóttir and her children, Atli (Eva), Idunn Maria and Ylfa Run were frequent visitors. Ylfa loved to practice her Canadian accent when she was learning English and always claimed us as her Canadian Amma and Afi. Steini was born September 26, 1928 at Djupidal in Geysir to Jonas Marino Jonasson and his wife Evelyn. Surviving are his brothers, Einar (Elsie) Jonasson and Raymond (Faye) Jonasson; brothers-in-law, Eric Johannson and Doug (Deb) Johannson, and sisters-in-law, Gudrun Jonasson, Irene Bjarnason, Diane Olafson and Sharlene Olafson. Predeceased by Gudrun (Sigurjon) Karvelson, Baldwin Jonasson, Jonas (Agnes) Jonasson, Bjorgvin (Barbara) Jonasson, Beatrice (Johnny) Johannesson, Norman, Kenneth and Russell Olafson, Charlotte Johannson and Louise (Alec) Cumberland. Steini enjoyed wonderful relationships with our nieces and nephews and that brought great pleasure into his and my life. Cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service. The family may have an intimate coffee and storytelling time at a later date. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

I was an elementary and high school friend of all three brothers as we navigated our disabilities together. I have cerebral palsy and use a wheelchair. We went back-and-forth on the school bus together every day, and I remember looking out school bus window, watching Mr. Jonasson operate the elevator that was outside the family home. It was there so that the boys could go in and out of the house. I thought that elevator was the most wonderful thing! I spent many Saturday afternoons there, at the house on Simcoe Street, learning how skilled the family was at crafting, and how absolutely unskilled I was. Nonetheless, the family was patient, and I learned a lot, especially from Mr. Jonasson. I still think of those days very often. Mr. J was like an Uncle to me. I love the family. My daughter, the one I never thought I'd have, is lovingly named Kendra, in honor of your Kendra, because I thought, at the time, if I ever had a daughter, I would want her to be just like yours. Mr. And Mrs. J taught by example – Family was always at the top of the list. When I moved from Winnipeg to California, this family was the one my 16-year-old self missed the most. I send my condolences along with much love to one of the best families in Winnipeg. - Posted by: Jan (Gushulak) Moore (Friend of Gregory, Mark and Brent) on: May 01, 2018
