ELSIE PETERSON (nee HOLSTEIN) Peacefully on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at the Riverview Health Centre, Elsie Peterson, aged 90 of Winnipeg, passed away. Elsie will be greatly missed by her daughter, Judy (Bob) Carey; son Larry Peterson; daughter-in-law, Julie Peterson; grandchildren, Jason, Paul (Tia), Tim (Nicky), Tessa Dyck and Jimmy; great-grandchildren, Cruz, Talia, Rylyn, Kennedy, Asher, Nathan, Tyniel Proulx (Karl), Lindsay, Krisy and Coleton; great-great-grandchildren, Tempy, Kaleb, Grayson, Maria, Liam, Aria and Gavlin; as well as her only surviving sister, Mary Scott. Elsie was predeceased by her husband James; son Douglas; parents, George and Anna Holstein; sisters, Millie, Anne, Emily, Mabel, Linda, Molly and Lil; and brothers, Henry and Fred. Mom was born March 16, 1927 on the farm near Runneymede, Saskatchewan, the youngest of 11 children (eight sisters and two brothers). She married the love of her life, James Gilbert Peterson on November 24, 1946. After Dad's death on September 21, 1955, Mom later moved to Winnipeg, where she made permanent residence for herself and her three children. Elsie worked as a bookkeeper for Pembina Mountain Clays, until their closure in Winnipeg, and then for Imperial Oil until her retirement. She loved to read and play shuffleboard. But her favourite pasttime was watching professional baseball on TV (while talking long distance with her sister, Lil about the game). She was a huge fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, and had the opportunity to fly to Toronto once to watch the Blue Jays play. Her grandsons always quizzed her about the players in the league, and she could answer almost every player's statistic. In 2012 Mom began showing signs of Alzheimer's disease and the next five years of her life became an every day challenge. I would like to thank the staff of Riverview Health Centre for their continued care provided to Mom during her time at Riverview. A special thank you to the palliative care team in the last 10 days of Mom's life, in particular Janet, who was so kind, caring and compassionate on Mom's first day back at Riverview to extend palliative care. A celebration of Elsie's life will be held on Friday, December 29 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, 309 Eveline Street, Selkirk, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. Condolences may be left at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
