BOHDAN (BARRY) CHABLUK
Date of Passing: Dec 25, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBOHDAN (BARRY) CHABLUK On Christmas Day, Barry left us to add his voice to a choir of angels. Barry was born on February 1, 1940 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was raised on the family homestead on Hazelridge Road at Cooks Creek, MB. He was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Church at Cooks Creek and later attended Cooks Creek School. Barry grew up in a family of music. He and his brothers would always find time to play guitar and sing. Music brought them together. Besides singing at home with the family, Barry became a charter member of the Immaculate Conception Male Choir. This brought him great joy. Barry's first jobs included working at Arnold Bros. and Woods Bag and Canvas. However, he soon answered the call for young men to work in the mines and headed off to Red Lake with his young family in 1964. Barry remained in Red Lake for another 52 years, working at various jobs, like Griffith Mine, Boart Hard Metals, and eventually finished his working career as a security guard. In 1977, Barry married Irene and they lived together in Red Lake until they retired to Dugald in 2016. Barry and Irene enjoyed 40 years of marriage. He loved his family, friends, and life but his passion was music. Whether it was a formal occasion, a church choir, or just friends getting together, Barry could always be counted on to pick up his guitar and sing a song. Countless times, Barry entertained both young and old, friends and family, or even someone he had just met. The house and garage on Buffalo Street was a place that anyone could count on to receive Barry's hospitality. Over the years, his bass voice resonated in many halls, houses and family gatherings. In his early years in Red Lake, he headed up the band "Barry and the Ramblers". He was a member of the Red Lake Legion, sang in the Chukuni United Church Choir and could be counted on to sing "O Canada" at many an event. Barry is survived by his wife Irene; children, Barry, Bob (Sandy), Marianne (Rick Gilbertson), Cindy (Bob Bodak), Sherry and Susie. He leaves behind eight grandchildren, Jeremiah (Brooke), Hannah (Chris Cucheron), Rachel (Jordan Maerz), Jonathon, Daniel, Stephanie, Braeden and Bryce. He also has five great-grandchildren, Alessandra, Carter, Remington, Rowan and Iris. He is also survived by brothers, Elmer, Lawrence, Peter, Ernie, John and sister Sophie and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen and Annie; his sister Elsie Skazyk and brothers, Meron, Julius, Harry, Antony and Paul. Barry's music and love for life brought him into so many people's lives. His guitar was an extension of him and it travelled many a mile and his songs enriched the lives of everyone who met him. And when it was time to go, he always left you with this thought "Take it easy and make it nice." Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at The OakBank United Church at 10:30 a.m. in OakBank, MB. Interment will follow at the Immaculate Conception Parish Cemetery in Cooks Creek. A celebration of Barry's life will also take place on Saturday, January 13, 2018 in Red Lake, ON. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to "The Red Lake Homeless Shelter, Box 946, Red Lake, ON P0V 2M0" or a charity of your choice. VICHNAYA PAMYAT seasonsfunerals.ca

My family were neighbours to Barry, Irene, and the kids back in the mid 80s. I was about 12 or 13 at the time and I went to school with Barry's daughters. I have fine memories of Barry and the family, of his guitar playing on the back deck, of his laughing, of watching the Stanley Cup at their house, of sharing crates of kiwi fruit (back when such things were a novelty), of playing with their dog Benji, of bears in our back yards, and of all the other good things of being neighbours in a small town. I'm sorry to hear that he's gone, but it seems that he left an impression on a lot of people. Best wishes to the family. Take care. - Posted by: David Finch (former neighbour) on: Dec 30, 2017
